ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

ok...the y7 is coming and had some questions
internally are they the same...for turbo-ing again?
and are the bearings any different that the weak one in the y8's?
anyone running boosted Y7s with good experience?
thanks

Who said the y8 has weak bearings? the y7 and y8 bottoms are nearly identicle.

The major problem with y8's are the shitty ass oil pumps that fail and destroy the bottom ends. In fact I think all obd2 d-series pumps are crap.

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

I have worked on 2 y7's with both around 100k that had killed bearings. I would like to find out what difference there is in the 88-95 pumps vs the 96+

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

It's because they put that homo crank position sensor down on the oil pump, it fucked everything up...

lol, thats the only difference externally, I havent looked inside both to compare yet.

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

isn't the y7/y8 bottom ends pretty damn close to the z6 (minus that obd2 bullshit of course)?

HMT-Admin 08-19-2004 02:10 AM

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

yup

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

next questions.. the unreliability factor that the d16y motors are experiencing; is that what's driving the price down? I mean the dude did get a pretty square deal.

Would it be possible to dump the knock sensor and install a z6 oil pump (running OBD1 of course) and then have a more reliable motor?

OnYx 08-19-2004 04:01 AM

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

yup youll just have to run OBD 1 or 0 and change the oil pan.

88crxSi 08-19-2004 07:07 AM

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

so d16yX series engine, z6 oil pump w/ z6 pan and thats it?

obviously obd1 due to the Crank fluctuation sensor.

jman30513 08-19-2004 07:30 AM

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

you do not have to use the crank sensor at all
and the y7 does have a boss (hole) for the sensor if i want to put it in the y7 block
ill simply take it outta my y8
these blocks are identical....the pistons are a little different...thats all
spent all day yesterday finding this out
ls/vtec owners dont use knock sensors and do just fine

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

and yes the stock y7-y8 oil pumps suck ass
im upgrading to a high-flow toga pump and acl bearings (they have special journals for more oil
any comments?...ill be building my y8 block on the side

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

if your using an OBD 2 computer you need the sensor.

jman30513 08-19-2004 08:05 AM

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

onyx....im not questioning your knowledge but do you know this from hands on experience or from other forums?
i talked to 3 guys from honda and 4 guys that are running the y7 block in a y8 car (head and comp)
none said it would matter
let me know

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

I have worked on several OBD 2 cars and my knowledge of OBD 2 systems will kill that "theory" that you don’t need the crank sensor on an OBD 2 car. Hell my ------- sol was OBD 2a and so is another friends sol that I have converted a D16z6 to run OBD 2 ECU's as well as B series ECU's. You need that sensor with any and I mean ANY OBD 2 ecu. Sure I can take a few sensors out and the car will still run but it won’t run correct.

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

ok...is there a spot on the y7 block for the sensor?
yes or no?
thanks

the sensor is built into the oil pump i Believe.

without this sensor your ecu will throw a CEL and go into LIMP mode...

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

thanks tek...but i got on this morning and all the forums had different comments and ideas
so im just making sure!
mainly i just need to know if the damn y7 has a hole for my knock sensor from my y8

I believe we're talkin about the crank flux sensor on the oil pump :) If not.. im pretty sure that's what Onyx and I are under the impression.. the previous posts lead me to believe we should be talkin about the CFS.

see there we go
i talked to 4 guys from honda yesterday and all said i would get codes but no limp mode....arghhhhhh
need someone that has taken a y7 block and put it in his or her car under a y8 head and comp

hmmmmmmm

anyone use them?
lemme know

Re:ok got my y7 coming...more help needed

just leave the stock bearings in there...just slapping new bearings in it will not be a great idea

The OBD2 crank sensor is mounted externall onto the pump is what I think he ment. They are not internal.

Me personally I dont like anything obd2 other than the entire harness can come out of the car from the ecu plugs.
