Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
After all that my stater ground was wrong. So my stater is now truning over my engine. The engine is getting gas and my spark plugs are fireing. but the engine is not running on its own. what the next step. why is it not catching. timing? im almost postive the timing is on. when you set the crank timing on the crank pulley which is supposed to be up the red or white line.

Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
anyone?
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
First off you firing order is correct right? #1 is actually #1?
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
I would say check your firing order. it's easy to mess this up. Done it before, once, and after hours of checking everything, Checked the timing and vroommm.

Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
i know this is elementry but start at the lower left on the dizzy and thats cyl 1 and then it goes clockwise right top left cyl 2. am i wrong.
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
it goes 1-3-4-2 starting at the lower left going clockwise. the white mark is your TDC.
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
Thats funny I swapped Distros and #1 became the upper left. Roll the motor over by hand to top dead center. take off the distro cap. whatever its pointing at is number 1. Then go clockwise.
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
ok will try
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
haha you had the same exact problem as me :P
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
yea well cant work on the pos today its snowing out
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
ok redid the spark plug wires and now i get a the engine to turn over and it is trying to start every now and a gain i am getting combustion like a small puff. so maybe my timing off. and else im missing.
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
they say the dizzy fits only one way, but i've seen them fit up to the motor and be 180 degrees off (the straight piece of metal that fits into the motor). maybe try pulling it off and checking to make sure its installed correctly.
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
u cant put a dizzy in upsidedown
unless you put a d dizzy on a b head |
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
yes you can i've done it
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
its hard to put a dizzy upside down. the two teeth are differant sizes
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
Ok the fact it wants to start but still doesnt means you still have your firing order wrong most likely
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
Plus when you prime the motor like that you are letting fuel enter everytime. Your cylinders are dumped with fuel and most likely plugs are fouled and not sure how long you have been doin this but washing out rings is a possibility too
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
If it makes the puffing noises, try going clockwise one more set on the dizzy.

Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
yea i have tryed turning it over alot. to much gas in the cylinder. i will set to tdc and try again
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
Fouled plugs wont allow a car to start. Go buy another set. lesson learned priming the ---- out of injectors and nothin to fire them =bad for plugs
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
my plugs are still sparking. not as big as i thought. they'll still work right
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.
ok... i put in a old set of plugs and still nothing. . lets talk about the dizzy. i gotta get this ----. ill try to turn the dizzy 180" today. the top left on the dizzy goes to cylinder #1 then the top right goes to cylinder #3 or cylinder #2. the cyllinders go 1-3-4-2. . thanks

Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
anyone with an answer. what do i do turn the rotor 180'
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
sounds like you just need to reset all your timing.
pull out your plugs, then turn the engine to tdc. the white mark with 2 little indentions on either side of it should be upwards, and you cam gear should have the "up" inscription generally up (if you have an a6, you use the crooked mark on the bottom of the gear to line up with the marks on the TB cover, if not then I don't know) then go pull off your dizzy cap and make sure it's pointing to the wire that goes to cylinder 1(the one closest to the timing belt) and when you go clockwise, it should then go to cyl 4, then 3, then 2...check that cuz it sounds like maybe 2 cylinders are firing or somethin like that. if there's some confusion then ask me |

18 16 14 TDC | | | | when setting the cam timing to crank timing you match 0 deg TDC on the block mark and the cam gears align however they should. then with the engine running you adjust the dist so that a timing gun lights up as the 16 mark passes that mark on the block... |
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
great info thanks
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
ok so i set the timeing the rotor points to the lower left dizzy plug, so i know im all set here. then going clock wise its 1-3-4-2. and its still not fireinging. it wants to it's turning over very fast. i tryed to start this engine about 30 times. are my plugs fucked. they come out soaked with gas. so whats the recourse. new plugs. what about the gas in the cylinder. so close.

|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
I would check the valve clearances. When i rebuilt my motor, i had the timing, firing order, etc all correct and i would crank and crank and crank but no start. Give it a shot.
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
did you check your fuel pressure? a bad ground to your fuel pump might be a problem. was with me and a few of my friends
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
im getting fuel. my first plugs were soaked. i think i flooded the cylinders and fouled the plugs. so i am going to get new plugs and set to tdc and try again.
|
Re: Ok..Finally some progress.....Again :(
Leave the plugs out for a while too to let the gas evaporate, and turn the engine over by hand or cut the fuel and try to start it to push some of the gas out of the engine. Then charge your battery-- I fixed my problem without knowing it because after it sitting for days with me trying to start it, the battery had run down on top of it. What are you using for fuel management? Because if its not right you could be flooding your engine anyway.
