Re: oil press to low d16y8

well the oil light is USELESS. It only comes on when it senses less than 5 PSI of oil, at which point, your motor becomes a big paperweight. So if you ever see that light come on and you're raping it, it basically says your motor has left the building...

In any case, what assumption did you have that lead you to believing you had low oil pressure? No vtec or something? Also have you changed anything aside from the oil pump?

b/c a friend told me he read the press has to be a 30 psi in ralenty and 75 psi at 3k rpm, and i placed a water cooler betwen block and oil filter (came from an honda s2k). i will try to take it off today, maybe i took the wrong hoses for water and besides of getting the oil cooler is hot faster.
Any idea if what my friend told is really? anyone

Well i was browsin through my service manual last night, and it said as long as you get over 50 ps at 3K rpm, you're good, and you should have at least 10 at idle. Personally I'd like to see at least 60-75 at 3k rpm, and probably 15-25 psi at idle. So take off the cooler and see what happens.

15psi from idle to 3kish and 60+ after is normal.

Shim the spring if your not happy with it. With it being a y series I'd take it out and swap in anything else besides a y series pump. Toss a Z6 pump in it, shim it and toss your cooler back on.

i have 43-44 at idle, above 1500 or so i have around 51-52 :)

then when im nice and warmed up i have 0 at idle, and 12 when floored!!! :D

hooray for spun rod bearings, it slops like hotrex down a hallway

am I the only one that thinks this is wierd? a water cooler? do you have water lines hooked up to that thing on the back of the block?

he choked it off, water coolers = bad, oil/trans coolers = good

Just trying.. if is too bad, why honda puts on S2k? and its working good, just finding the right hoses!

simple things here, but sometimes it is the simple things we overlook
-what weight oil are you using?
-have you tried changing your oil filter?

I had low oil pressure for a while when i was turbo, then I removed the turbo and it was fine. a month later it was running low again, and I couldn't figure it out. no leaks anywhere. Changed the oil with 15w50-- nothing, still low. Then it hit me. Even though the oil filter wasn't over 3k old, the motor had taken some pretty heavy abuse and some heavier oils and additives to help with the low compression. Swapped the oil filter and it was fine again.
When I say low, i was running 15psi warm idle and 55-60 3k. Normal for my engine (b18b) is 35psi warm idle and 70-75 at 3k. Thats what it was on 5w30 before I turbo'd and beat the ---- out of it, now to get that I have to use slightly heavier oils ;)
