oil cooler info needed...

I want to put a oil cooler on my project turbo car. My question is- do I need to shim the oil pump to get higher pressure, for it to work properly? I am running a low mileage obd1 LS motor. Everything is stock. I plan to use 1/2 inch lines but i'm not sure if that is too big or not. If anyone has a setup on there ride, i would appreciate some info on it. thanks

No.
Yes or No depending on where you're drawing your oil from and what all is in that loop.

sounds like a sweet way to toast your bearings :P

I have read about many people running oil coolers and making the oil to cool, unless its a die hard track car(auto-x) I think you will do more harm then good.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I have a sandwich plate for the oil filter housing. I understand that if it drops the oil pressure, it will destroy the bearings. I'm just trying to use this for longevity of the motor and turbo. Cooler oil will not breakdown as fast as the burning hot oil coming through the turbo. My main question was what size oil lines to run so that I don't cause pressure drop. I plan to use my car as a D.D. and a weekend track slut.

don't use rubber lines, thats for sure!

#8AN at the min, prefer #10AN SS braided lines.

I know 84-87 crx blocks had stock oil coolers.Old ls integra's have them zc 1.6.You can take the oil cooler off of it and bolt
it up too a ls block. You have too make sure you get that threaded bolt that goes through the oil cooler.I've ran them and my oil pressure
was a hell of alot high after a race. You can use the integra-civic oil filter. It seems too me that would be safer.

Thanks for the responses. I really never thought of taking one off of a different motor. I already have the sandwich plat though.

Sell it and run it it off the oil pressure sending unit.To feed the oil too the turbo.
Your going too be buying steel braided lines, might as well get the kit.

The d15z1 has them also. In the 92-95 Civic VX. It has rather narrow coolant lines running to it from the rear water pipe going to the water pump. Much smaller looking compared to the b-series ones I've seen.

The z1 is a hot running, lean-burn motor, so I guess it's needed to keep the oil lasting to help the motors run well over 200k miles w/no problems. I can't imagine it would be there to hurt the motor.

I think i'm gonna pull one from a accord. I was told by a repitable mechanic that most accords have the sandwich plates on the back of the block.

Re: oil cooler info needed...

The oil filter is the same on all 84-2000 hondas/acuras.Except 84-87 had a fat oil filter but even the new smaller ones screw on too them.So the oil cooler on a sohc would fit dohc.
I really don't think that the oil cooler on any of them, are bigger on each motor that has them.
Then they would have different oil filters for the bigger oil coolers.
I have never seen a stock b series one.I have a dohc zc one and a accord one they look the same too me.
I guess you can run part numbers.

Re: oil cooler info needed...

I always wondered about the whole thermostat thing w/ add on air-to-oil coolers... So it's closed at startup (duh), gets hot enough to open and then all of a sudden your sandwich plate is gonna be returning ambient temperature oil to the motor. Wouldn't that be a bit of a shock? 180deg->70deg ?

Thoughts? :1
