not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
well im not sure what bearing to use after the micropolish on one rod journal. The rod bearing seem to be not within spec. I was using the ACL bearings. And all of the main/rod journals are within spec except one rod journal. So I know I have to replace that rod journal with an OEM bearing. But my question is how the heck am i going to know what bearing size to use after the micropolish. Before the micropolish that particular journal seem to be within spec. After the micropolish, the journals seems to got smaller. Help?

plastigauge.......get some

yes i know plastigage them. Thats why i said they are not within spec. So how would i know what size am i suppose to get?

get a micrometer and measure the journal size on the rods and on the crank, and buy what you need. |
Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
measuring the journals takes to damn long
with you old bearing measure the clearance with the plastigauge and add it to the thickness of your old bearing. subtract what the OEM clearance should be and that is what size bearing you need. |
Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
yeah, plasitgage is fine, but he said he already plasitgaged it and it's not within spec anymore, so what do you suggest, but one set of every color bearing at the note of about 25 bucks per set, just to plastigage each one to see which one fits best? the proper way to do it is to measure the big end bore of the rod with a dial bore and measure that particular journal with a micrometer. after you do that and get the measurements, use this equation.
BC = IDBT – ODC – (2 x BT) BC = bearing clearance IDBT = inside diameter of bearing tunnel (housing bore) ODC = outside diameter of crank journal BT = bearing thickness here is a chart for honda b series bearings, not sure what motor you have, but you may have to do some searching if you have other than a b series, because i'm not sure about those. Blue 1.510-1.507 mm 0.0594”- 0.0593” Black 1.507-1.504 mm 0.0593”- 0.0592” Brown 1.504-1.501 mm 0.0592”- 0.0591” Green 1.501-1.498 mm 0.0591”- 0.0590” Yellow 1.498-1.495 mm 0.0590”- 0.0589” Pink 1.495-1.492 mm 0.0589”- 0.0587” Red 1.492-1.489 mm 0.0587”- 0.0586” |

i suck, i didnt read your whole post.

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
when the guys in the shop do a rebuild thats how they do it, VW clearances are a little bit loose when compared to a Honda but they are usually pretty damn close to thier exact calculation and they are always in spec.

i didnt know a mircropolish can take that much mm off a journal.

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
well the helms manual said the service limit for a D16z6 was 0.02 in for both main/rod. but someone else on HT said main should 0.0015-17 and rod should be 0.0017-19 and didnt have a problem. So im confuse ??? ???

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
it really depends on what you want from the motor. tighter clearnaces (.0015-.0017) for lower power and longevity, and looser (for better oil flow) for higher horsepower, but people claim the bearings won't last 'as' long. i wouldn't be scared to run them as tight as .0015 or as loose as .002, but i wouldn't go tighter or looser that that for any application. with that being said, you never answered what your actual clearance were :P

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
all green or all yellow mains, how they do rebuilds at the dealership.........
Went all greens on the Z6 five years ago, no problems! |
Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
mistabone, what about the rods? Can they be all green/yellow too?

never replaced mine yet......

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
well i got everything all installed. And ready to start up. Everything seems to be within spec. ACL is the ISH! ;D But the crank is so hard to turn with everything in place. It has been torque down properly. Bolted two screws in the crank (flywheel side) and tried turning it by hand. It would not move. So i used a piece of rod and tried slightly to turn it. The crank turns but it seems like something is making the crank not spin freely. I believe its the thrust washer because when i tried turning the crank. Half the thrust washer came out. I mean I know i installed it right. Because the Groove side suppose to face outward right? Is it because it is lacking oil and theres some friction? I mean I lube everything up before the final install. Help?

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
The crank should spin pretty freely with no piston/rod assemblies attached to it. If it doesn't, something's wrong. Take it back apart and recheck.

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
Dude....stop.... i did a rebuild last year and the crank was hard to move and i started it up and man did i ---- up. every thing must be moving freely.

Re: not sure what bearings to use after micro polish on crank
Hi, this is Blanco from HondaSwap and D-Series.org...for those that know me on those sites.
I hate to threadjack, but I'm having a similar problem and I don't want to start another topic about it. I bought a disassembled Z6 block and the large bore ends of my rods were enlarged slightly, before I bought them. I sized the bearings using the block/crank method because I was told the bores were still stock. I got brown for rods 1&4 and green for rods 2&3, these platigauged to .002". So I tried the brown on journals 2&3 and they platigauged to .0017"-.0018". I'd like to get a .0015" clearance, do I need to move up two bearing sizes instead of just one? |
