New rings in Type R....

Default New rings in Type R....

i'm planning on replacing the rings on my engine considering the compression on cylinders 1 and 2 are 180 psi....3 and 4 are about 210....(stock should be 270) damn thing's smoking like a train under a load too....i've done like 10 swaps but i've never been through internals on a honda engine before and i wanna freshen this one up a little....the list of parts i've been reffered to replace so far are: oem rings, arp headstuds (some say reuse my old ones other say no) oil pan gasket, headgasket, rod bearings, and mains if necessary....i'm not gonna worry about the head or anything just wanting the rings replaced.....if anyone has any advice, how to's or tip's on this i am open for whatever thanks.....

Get a helms manual. Tearing apart a motor realliy isn't difficult, you just have to be careful and take your time. Make sure you keep the rods and rod caps together, make sure the arrow faces the right way on the pistons, make sure you clock the rings correctly (or you will go through oil) and yeah take your time.

oh and this is an IN CAR deal i'm doing too....i was gonna try taking the head off with the intake manifold attached, also i am wondering....i know i have to take the cams out to get to the head bolts....do i have to take the valve springs and retainers out also or can i leave them in?

you can leave the valves and retainers and springs in. The cams and cam caps and covers all have to come out. Remember, everything goes in, the same way it came out. Leave the main bolts, there's no reason for them to be messed up, get arp head studs, for 100 bucks, why wouldn't you? Plus you can re-use them over and over. New headgasket is a must. Obviously you need new rings and a hone job, but depending on the miles i'd rather take the motor out and throughly check the cynlinder walls for out-of-round and taper. If it's as bad as you said, then the walls are probably fucked, and you should probably over bore it and get oversize pistons but that's just me. With a D series i wouldn't give 2 ***** but with a type r, i'd care a little more. Other than that it's all up to you and how much you wanna spend.

thanks for the advice....i will go with the arp headstuds, heard a lot of good things about them....i'm not too concerned with the cylinder walls because the rings were burnt up simply from the car running WAY too rich, washing the cylinder walls of oil...i'll have it checked though......i got the engine and ecu from a friend dirt cheap and he was running some gay ebay chip in it which usually dumps fuel, also the the fuel regulator was adjustable and set at like 60 psi... (also not knowing any of this when i bought it) so i adjusted the fuel to stock and JD chipped the p28 for me...fuel's good now just needs rings....i'll be having the head checked for leaks also but i believe the head will be ok........

If it's a mystery motor, then personally I would take the entire motor out and check everything.

if i start running into anything that's what i'll end up doing, actually as i am going into this it's not as bad as I thought it would be....things are looking pretty top notch

the engine already has some headstuds in it so i'm assuming i won't need to be replacing those...i am wondering if i should go with like a 1 or 2 layer head gasket to bump the compression a little, or are those not as reliable as a oem 3 layer? let me know what you think...

If you're ever planning on boosting this car, I wouldn't recommend a 1/2 layer headgasket. Cometic makes custom headgaskets at many layers.also, it might be easier just to pull the motor from the car, it;ll be 10x easier to do everything and you're probably gonna want to have it honed by a machine shop. Also, make sure you have a reliable torque wrench and a good supply of plastigage. And of course a good manual, which you can download from links here.

appreciated...i've decided to got with an oem gasket...the engine already has headstuds so thats a plus...real deal jdm type r pistons (p73-00) and real deal US Type r cams...cylinder walls look pretty good but i haven't done measurements yet...
