I have a 91 crx si with almost everything done but my engine. I'm only 19 so i dont have 6 grand to be throwing around. The car is off the road for winters, so its basically a daily driver in the warm weather ( i live in MA). I have always wanted to do something turbo, but i wont give in to 3,000 for a kit. I have several possible engines i would want to do. Either an ls with a turbo, a gs-r with spray, or maybe a zc with a turbo. I know every 1 is gonna say "make your damn mind up". Thats what im trying to do. I can come up with an ls for around 12-14 for everything, and a gs-r for under 3. However, im not sure about everything you need for a home made turbo kits. How much would it cost to build a complete turbo for the zc.... or the ls? I would need fuel management, new clutch, etc. If any one has a kit, knows what i need, or wants to call me names, please let me know. Thanks alot guys ???

throw a homemade turbokit on the stock si motor. then if you ever want to throw a zc or z6 in there the kit will just bolt right up. i'd say thats the best way

I would be breaking down your buildup into stages, and give yourself a year or so for each stage....You have to plan really really well if you want to be a "Baller on a budget"

....The D16a6 turbo, (what the first two said) is defenatly the way to go for going fast. Keep in mind though that to do it right even a home brew turbo kit will be in the 1k range (for a dependable boost).

Anyways I think your first stage is going to be the turbo...read on in the FAQ sections to learn what that entails, lots of prior experience of boosted D motors on this website.

After you get that turbo up and moving, you can spring for a Vtec Z6 head to add a little to flow. You can usually pick these up for a few hundred AT MOST.

A stage 3 might be replacing the D's internals to up your boost, It'd be pretty easy after this to put down a lot of power, more then a B16 and comparable to a B18C (the d will be faster as boost kicks in, but the B18 is going to be a lot more torqued)

All this should get you going pretty damn fast, and if you sold the car you could still get a little money back....

o yea, i should have mentioned my reasoning for a swap. My clutch is toast, my tranny makes some grinding kid of noise, i was told it was my front bearing, and my engine burns lots of oil. it gets all over the back of my car on a daily basis. I guess the best idea would be to do a zc swap and a turbo kit?? I might just put in a gsr engine to make life easy, but i guess thats takin the easy way out right? :-\

....Front bearing??? I take it that must be a thrust bearing....part of the clutch probably due to toasting the clutch. If its a wheel bearing then you need to get that taken car of (and quick, leads to wheel failure)

Your oil problem can be fixed (sounds like piston rings to me) not to thick on the pocket book, but gonna take some time to fix.

...however you are probably right time for a new engine. Im not a huge fan of the b18c in the EF chasis. I like seeing the b16a a little better. gonna save a little on the cost, and a lot on labor/install headache.

not that b18 swap is hard, just takes a little more care/parts. As the B18 unlike the b16 was never designed to be shoehorned into the little EF engine bay. The money you save could be put back into the engine

My opinion is.....(drum roll please)....

1. if you have the cash....get a B16a swap and DIY. the swap is easy and can help you build confidence in doing your own work. This engine is really damn cool and can get every bit as fast as a b18c in the EF chasis.

2. if cash is tight...then pick up a dirt cheap Hf/dx engine to keep your vehicle on the road (150$), pull your d block and open it up, and rebuild it for turbo. Slap a Z6 head on it then turbo it in a year or so....

how about this one... we combine them. Ill get a b16 and do the swap with my buddy. I think between the 2 of us we should be pretty good. Then ill keep my d16 and rip it apart, then do what i can on the side. Since it out and have no use for it, i can work on it with no rush. Whenever i finish, ill pick up an old hf crx and throw it in there?? gives me something to do in my free time that i have none of.

So u really say the b16a over the b18c even tho it has more hp and tq? i guess i could probly save a grand to throw back in the the engine. Maybe get some cams, intake manifold, bolt ons? i gotta beat a SHO in the spring!

Really the biggest advantage of the b18 is the torque numbers, so if you plan on an N/A set up then do that....but for speed on bang for the buck then yeah I would choose the b16 over the b18. Id take the 1k I saved and build a turbo kit (like the one in my basement under 1k w/ AFC/Intercooler/Timing control/etc)....

A boosted b16 is going to eat an SHO for breakfast lunch and dinner, and leave leftovers. Especially in a Rex, the little damn cars dont need much Hp before they are really Freakin fast.

I agree!! ;) especially in a crx body! they are the best...any little horsepower you add to a light body will get you moving in no time!

well, maybe im not even going to do a swap after all. I just found a local guy on a boston forum i belong to that will rebuild the engine and do a custom turbo set up, up to 20 psi, for around 2500. I think this is gonna be my best, no new mounts, or shift linkage, and ill still be pretty damn fast. Keep it d-series and have it "home made". not be me tho, i guess im kinda cheeting and should leave the forum now, huh? lol
