motor ran before

ok the motor ran before the timing belt broke. so we got a new one. the timing belt is a gsr the cams are pr3 the head is b16 and block is b18c. when i read the book it said to have the up arrows up and the dashes line together. but what about the holes in the cam if iput a pin in the up arrows are slanted to the left and the lines are off. whitch do i use the lines on the cam gears or the pin holes in the cam?

from what i hear they will never align perfectly up and down, use the pin holes.

If your timeing belt broke you probly bent a valve wich means your not going to have compression on whatever cylinder has a bent valve. Replacing the timeing belt is not going to help you. You might have got lucky but on any b-series dohc motor the clearances are small enough to allow a valve to be easily bent

Take out your cams to close all the valves' and hit all the cylinders with a leakdown tester. Compression test them too, even tho leakdown testing is the best method. Even if the valve is only slightly bent, itll caus it to not seat properly.

Now, if youve already done that and your very lucky and didnt bend any valves the motor would still run even if it was a tooth off on either the intake or the exhuast. It may even run with 2 teeth off, but im not sure. So if it were still ok inside the motor, it would most likely run with the valve timeing slightly off.

you dont have to take your cams out to do a leakdown. just rotate the cams until the cylinder that you are testing has all the valves closed ( compression stroke). then you can proceed. takeing the cams out is way to much just to close the valves. i would think that yes you have the possabilty of bending a valve or two but it would still start up and run, it would run like ---- but it would run. unless some freak accident happend and more than one cylinders valves were bent. what is happening when you turn it over? does it backfire?

Re: motor ran before

it was backfiring. i get 210 on all pistones. got it running now and we pulled the head off after the timing belt broke and no valves were bent. talk about luck.
the crank was 180d off so the dizz was pointing at 4 and not 1.
