Default Mini-Me Swap Questions;;;

As of right now, I have a 1990 CRX Si, and I'm sure you all know that the power for these stock is almost applaudable. It's quick, but I just want to pull a tad out of the b16 savings and add some horsepower to get me by, not to mention the whole experience of doing the mini-me. Anyway, the motor is the d16a6, and I was looking around, and my friend has 2 y8 heads, and I planned on buying one for $100, pulled off I believe a 98 civic with 30K on it. Is there any reason, that puttin a y8 head instead of say a z6 head is a bad idea? I can't seem to find any z6 heads around, and I'm not toooooo knowledgable about the swaps yet but I know that the d16z6 is the vtec of my car, (as far as USDM goes anyway), but I didn't know that a y8 would even fit. So as I said, is there any reason why this would be a bad idea? Also, I'll take any given information about the benifits and negatives of a mini-me, or whatever you have to say.

there are a TON of info on that swap. Search with mini me swap. Everything about that swap has been answered. Just do some reading. But...I'll help you a bit here.

*off the top of my head....from the early days..* There is nothing bad with the y8 heads at all. All in all...then same head with diff characteristics. Squared chambers but with a bad flow port. The z6 has very good flow numbers stock but the y8 can be just as good with a mild port job. the closed chamber will yeild a bit higher compression. You can run the y8 or the z6 head on your motor. Just use teh right cam gear, hg, and timing belt. If you're funning this in an older setup (obd0) you'll either need to wire it to obd1 w/ a vtec ecu or the old...vtec on a switch (which is pretty ghetto, inconsistent, and unreliable)....or....get a chip for your ecu to run a p28 map. The switch idea is probably the worse idea...but just a thought. The power diff is pretty low IMO. If you've saving for the b16....then just wait. BUT...there isn't much of a power diff with the b16s either. Feels more torquey and powerful....but i've seen MANY z6 that has pulled better times and power numbers..with minimal mods. Just food for thought. Now go do some homework and ask questions when you're ready to learn.

Actually, since posting this I have done a lot of research. As far as the vtec stuff, I had planned to pick up an A'PEXi vtec controller. My brother just picked up a 91 hatch with this hugee list of modded ----. In end, dyno'd and everything it's got 196 hp at the weels. I believe it's a ZC frankenstein more or less, 1.8 bottom, 1.6 DOHC vtec head. Anyway, back to where I fit in all this, there is an A'PEXi vtec controller used in his car, and he's had nothing but good comments on it. About the whole b series, I'm sure your right. I've done a lot of research that should have been done sooner, and found that the power increases/price to that of a b series compared to a zc is that the zc can be bumped almost just as much for a whole lot less. So I may just change the b16 savings to a zc savings. As far as the y8 head, I believe it actually has been ported, so that would take care of that.

The only question that nobody has yet answered for me, is about compression. I don't really understand compression, and what's dangerous and whats not. I understand why it is dangerous, but I don't understand the dangerous area's of the numbers. The d16a6 has a cr of 9.1:1 and the d16y8 has a cr of 9.6:1. Is this dangerous enough that i'm going to have to change a lot of stuff, or use the super unleaded or what? I understand i'll probably have to change something but I figure I would like to know exactly what and how dangerous.

***I used the compression calculator, but didn't know which piston i would be using because i'm not 100% keen on the internals of an engine. with the d16a6 pistons the cr is 10.07:1, and with the d16y8 pistons it is 9.52. Again, I need the whole dangerous levels help.***

good thing about the y8 head is that the si dizzy mates up to the y8 head.

on the compression calculator you would use a6 pistons.
