where would i put the mass air flow sensor on a 03 eclipse if i turbo'd it?

normally in front of the Compressor inlet, however on a project I did a few months ago on a kia it didnt like it there at all. And I actually had to run the maf inline on the charge piping.

he pretty much nail'd it. but i wanted to ask. if my motor came turbo with a MAF pre turbo, can i change it to run inline with ic piping (blow through) with no problems??

ya know I honeslty dont know the reliability of throwing a Maf inline like I did, I was super hesitant on doing it, however it seemed to run 10 times better, and idled alot better. For a factory FI car I wouldnt move it at all. I think the majority of MAF driven cars will want it in front of the compressor. You may just want to dick around with it. What was funny on the turbokia, I could watch with our scanner while driving and it would always throw a MAF high input code when it hit 5psi, but the code vanished as I let off throttle... still baffeled me the thing worked.

haha. well i guess i'll try that. i'll put it infront of the compressor if it doesn't run good i'll move it. we'll figure it out. thanks jeff

Were you exceeding the flow capacity of the sensor?

Karmaan type can not be placed after the turbo, they sense velocity velocity only (by picking up the frequency of the turbulance after the sensor probe :p). With a known velocity, area, pressure (slight vacuum), and a measured temperature flow rate is calculated. DSM's have these.

Hot wire type can be placed after the turbo. They measure flow rate (by measuring the cooling of a heated wire element). Since they measure rate, pressure and temperature are already accounted for, the area is factored in. Gm's have these.

Since on both the area of the sensor element is smaller than the area of the sensor unit, you can move the sensor element into a larger housing, and get more flow, while cutting fuel delivery, sort of like an AFC hack. Double the flow area, double the injectors, and you will have twice the flow and hide excessive flow from the ECM.

Obviously ;) I was just so baffled it would set a code, than vanish.. very un obd2 like.

but if it didn't do that on the intake side, which makes me think it maybe has a built in pressure sensor, since flow will be the same on both sides

well you'd think.. however at idle I could never get the car to smooth out with the MAF in front of the compressor. But once put inline it ran absoultly perfect.
