LS/Vtec question
ok... well Im thinking of a b18a for my rex rather then a b16/b18c due to costs.
Now for the question. People say that a LS/vtec isn't a long term swap because the long stroke of the b18a will kill a high revving engine. Well, why not just swap in a b16 or a gs-r crank to shorten the stroke? |
Re:LS/Vtec question
that is a mini me swap but you change out the pistons and rods as well.
|
Re:LS/Vtec question
thats not a mini me, a mini-me is a6 w/ y8orz6 head.
thats a b18a block w/ b16 head (ls/vtec) but thanks, piston/rod/crank are different to the gsr (not including the intake manifold.) |
Re:LS/Vtec question
how hte hell did i type mini-me??? i was tired as hell. so ignore it:)

Re:LS/Vtec question
back in NYc my friends use to call me the LS/VTEC king...
i would build them like once a week, for myself, my friends and customers. Every car i have ever owned in NYC, had a LS/VTEC engine in it last....what i mean is i would swap a GSR, later i would build a faster LS/VTEC and swap out the GSR. LS/VTEC's are great. |
Re:LS/Vtec question
the rod/stroke ratio is bullshit. it will last a long time. my 400sb is the longest stroked small block chevy and it revs to 7200 and will be for a long time... but its balanced :/

Re:LS/Vtec question
i have never blown an LS/VTEC, nor have i EVER seen one blew up, heard of many that blew up, but non of mines, nor the ones i built...(excluding the few i have seen on Boost blown)

Re:LS/Vtec question
LS/Vtecs are great!!! Sure the rod ratio isnt as good as the GSR or a B16, but I've seen some serious power out of them, and its about all I build for my customers too. Cheap way to build a GSR, and you end up with more torque, and with a little compression good hp #'s. One of my favorite little builds is ITR pistons. With a B16 head it gives you about 11.2:1.

Re:LS/Vtec question
well all this info has been very helpful.. I dont have much worries about reliability w/ a ls/vtec now...'
im thinking of a b18a in my rex over the winter. tare it down and rebuild it properly. and then in the spring slap a b16 head on it. so I should replace the b18a pistons w/ ITR pistons? |
Re:LS/Vtec question
I would. I just built one with B16 pistons (PR3). With a little head shave and stuff I got the static CR to 12:1. Good for all motor, not for boost. I'm currently building a turbo LS with ITR pistons. I may make it a turbo lsvtec in the future. Compression makes power, period.
|
Re:LS/Vtec question
yeah compression makes power, but... more air makes more power than compression. so an engine with 8:1 compression and 12psi would make more power than a engine with 10:1 compression and 6psi. out of the same turbo. i think? :P

Re:LS/Vtec question
It'll probably be cheaper to get a b16 swap and get a separate b18 block. If you're going NA, you'd definitely want the B16 tranny. You can probably sell the b16 block for the price of the b18 block and keep the b16 pistons.
I bought a ls swap and then bought all the parts for the b16 swap, I wouldn't have done that again. |
