LOWERING Oil Pressure... What Oil To Run? Additives? Temporary Fix Need Help

Ive got a oil burning problem, aparently due to some shitily placed oil control rings
My motor only burns oil and smokes when fairly cold, at idle and when compression breaking and when oil psi is above 25psi

I would like to make it so that my oil gets up to operating temp faster (im running no thermo so I doubt that helps) and so that my oil pressure would stay down thus keeping oil from slipping passed the ring possibly

It only smokes at idle for some reason, pisses me off and its embarrassing. Hope this can hold me off if it works until winter.

Thanks guys

This is a funny thread. I think you should drill a small hole in your main oil gallery to lower your oil pressure, less smoking from your rings and you will spin a bearing. then you can replace the whole rotating assembly and fix the problem at hand. ::)

Im not trying to fix, Im trying to BANDAID for 3 months until winter possibly

Ive got a built motor here as my spare but do not want to install it yet

I would like to lower oil pressure quite a bit because it only smokes at at stop and with high oil pressure, my oil pressure on a cold start is 75psi, quite high. Even after being run for 10 min its still only 45-50 at idle

I would like to bring that number drastically down I think so the pressure is less great and it wont make it into the combustion chamber or maybe just a lot less that I can tolerate

Or maybe I need to go with thicker oil and it wont sneak passed?

your bandaid is going to ruin the motor if you actually take any physical steps to try to lower oil pressure. if it smokes try some sort of no-smoke additive or thicker oil or some ----

Well since the smoke seems to go away with the low oil pressure, wouldnt thin oil be best as it would thin out and possibly heat up faster

hell, even hydraulic oil I can get, thin as ----

well my thinking is that thicker oil wont be pushed through as easily...but whatever floats your boat

where is it being pushed through is the question.............. rings or valve guides/seals....

Step it up to gear oil?......

It only smokes when coming to a stop and when the pressure goes OVER 40PSI

I can definetely remedy this I beleieve, definetely need to put the thermonback in to heat the oil up quicker, maybe some very thin oil and osme addidtives

I dont know what the problem is though

switch to 5w20

If you really want to lower your oil pressure just take the spring out of your oil pressure relief valve and cut a little off and see how it effects your pressure.

thats pretty retarded imho. id guess that its your valve guide seals but thats just a total guess.

If it only smokes at idle, and when above 45psi, anything I can do to lower my pressure will be a good thing

Does it smoke at high vacume conditions?? IE- valve seals or guides. or under load IE- rings

Run a 10ft. oil feed line to the oil pan.

Im putting in some 5W-20 right now, then maybe some of that stop smoke additive I seen at the store today

Aparently its my valve seals

Anyone have a preferred brand of additive to grab for make these valve seals swell up?

Oil stabilizer? Didnt sound appealing, what does it do?

I got the 5w-20 (---- is that ---- ever like water) and the thermo in now, havent driven it yet. Going to the store @ 8 or so when it opens to grab a fuel filter and some sort of oil additive

Not that i know of oil pressure has anything to do with oil getting pass the rings :l oil are splashed on to the cylinder wall then gets SCRAPPED down by the control rings. even if u lower it to 5 psi as long as the wall is getting oil it will still burn oil when the rings are bad.

Use thicker oil will help a lot, try 10w-40, when my car was burning oil I tried some 20W-50 Mobile 1 and the smoke completely stopped.
I`ve also seen a few guy on H-T experiencing the same problem ONLY with certain brand of oil.

FYI i`ve treid that lucas ---- on nurmous car and let me tell you it does NOT work when ur burning mad oil LOL. don`t wast your money.
oh and how hard it is to change the valve seals anyway, doesn`t take u too much time, change all the seals to pinpoint the problem.
