For the love of ... Engine Not Starting!

Hey,

The new motors in.... but its fooked. Let me see where to start. Its in a 97 del sol s, using the d16y7 wiring harness. The block is a y8 and the head is a d16z6. The intake manifold is a d16y8. Using NGK Platinum R plugs at the moment (this is no boost right now).
Was trying to do the AFC hack, 450cc blue top injectors.

Basically we got the block in the car, and tried to turn it over after everything was hooked up. Starter engaged, got no fuel smell or any engine response.
Onyx seemed to figure that the y7 harness for 'injectors' was opposite of the y8, so he reversed it. Distro is from the Y7. Now we seemed to be getting fuel in the cylinders... in fact so much fuel that the spark plugs were covered in it about 8 threads high. HOWEVER, at one point the car did start... and ran really hard. The place started to reek of gas, and then as soon as I let off the throttle the car killed itself. At this time, I had programmed the AFC only to lean out mixture by -50% from 1-2500 rpm and I think that I actually revved it passed 2500 RPM and this may have dumped enough fuel to kill it.

After this, I thought the engine was terribly flooded, and Onyx wanted to just get the car to turn over. Agreed to return to factory injectors, got them all set up... tried to start nothing. Checked the timing, reset the head to TDC and the block to TDC. Also changed out cam gears to the d16y7 gear (since its easier to read TDC).

Keep trying to start it over and over, nothing. Still getting the stench of fuel from the engine bay, pull out the plugs they're not covered now with fuel... but they're also not warm at all?

I don't know what to do now, the engine is getting compression because when you hold your hand over the throttle mouth when the butterfly opens it will tug on you when the starter is engaged.

There a few possibilities in my head,

a) spark plugs are no good now
b) plug wires are no good now
[ all worked before this engine swap ]
c) fuel injectors are wired incorrectly (sigh, again)
d) very minimal chance but the alternator might be busted?

I'm just curious how I can test to see if I'm getting a spark without frying myself... and how to test which cylinders are actually getting gas (if possible, which I don't think it is )

Thank you in advance...

to check for spark, ,pull the fuel puump fuse so u dont flood it and take a plug wire out and hold it to the valve cover. do not do this for too long.

hrm...

first off what injectors are you using. if its a y8 thats from the 96-00 civic ex so u should be using the obd2 injectors and obd2 intake manifold. what distributor are you using the y8's?

me honestly i think its probably the timing and the spark. also that safc might be wired wrong for u to be getting so much fuel. ur best bet would be to take it out and see if the problem persists. if it doesn't its something ur doing wrong.

a easier way to check for spark is to start off like this..

1. unplug one of wires keep it about 1 inch from where its supposed to be plugged in at the distributor. see if there is any spark. if there is then its not in the ignition, distrib, cap, coil , ignitor blah bal h

2. unplug the spark plug wire at the motor and pull it up till the tip is out a bit. u might wanna do this in the dark so u can see the glow from the spark.. if u have it its not the wires u are getting spark to the plug.

i would change the plugs if u are getting spark and then see what happens just because plugs are a cheap fix at this point.

See what happens from there. are there any check engine lights? do u know how to check the ecu for cell codes?

if u have questions on how to do that email me at work or im me.

I just couldn't remember how to test the spark :) Thank you

If its not this I'm going to explode, is there anywhere to test to see if you're getting fuel or not?

Have tried using the distro from the D16y7 and the d16z6. I do not have a distro for the Y8. I am using the D16Y8 intake manifold, as well as the fuel injectors from the d16y7.

alright your car is obd2.
therefore you should have a obd2 wiring harness.
u can use all of the same pieces what im honestly not to sure of is whether or not the dizzy is the same.

i do know that your gonna need some kinda vtec activated switch so figure that out kid.
but im sure the problem lies in the wiring.

not the spark just check it htough like i told u...

Re:For the love of ... Engine Not Starting!

The harness is reworked for VTEC and we have an OBD 1 P28 ECU with a OBD2 to OBD1 harness conversion. We are not throwing any codes ATM with the ECU's except for the other O2 sensor that is not plugged in (OBD 2). I think hte battery is totally fucked ( it reads 12 volts but has no power to push the starter for mroe than 2 seconds and dies) so well get anew battery and see if it helps.

okay this is actually chacko just at onyx's house...

The battery was junk, we replaced it and the car started immediately... its idling really really really really rough. I mean like it sounds like a big block V8.
If I push the gas from in the car, it doesn't seem to respond worth a ----. He operates the butterfly directly and it has a slow response but does actually cause it to gain revolutions.

Then we got our first check engine codes wahoo! for VTEC and IACV. Both were fixed, ecu reset, and the codes didn't come back. Still have a rough idle, and until about 2k rpm the car is shaking really hard and not giving any throttle response. If I hold it at wot and then release it it will rev up real fast and go back down. Sometimes while idling the car will kill itself.

WTF is going on!

your timing is off by a mile. re check it and put a gun on it.

It almost sounds like the injectors are firing at the wrong time....? Did you mention that someone messed with the injector wiring?
