lexan windows
I had the idea of putting lexan windows in my 88 hb. how would I go about doing this or would it even work with the curves? I would like to do all windows.

Re: lexan windows
is this ur daily?
if it is, have fun looking through foggy windows all day long :P |
Re: lexan windows
yes it is
Why would they be foggy? |
Re: lexan windows
Lexan likes to turn foggy when it is exposed to UV over a long time.
Unless you get the REALLY Expensive stuff. and I mean REALLY expensive. We've worked with it at work, but It will still fog over time. |
Re: lexan windows
i think it needs to be heat streched somehow to make the curves..i think it would be a pain to make your own
|
Re: lexan windows
does plexiglass fog up too? I only have 3 windows left in the parts car (windshield, hatch window, and right rear window) and I'd like to strip that bitch down and put plexiglass windows in.

Re: lexan windows
Don't really know, but I would assume, UV likes to break down basically anything. At a Co-op placement for college we would spend HOURS UV testing material because it was a texile place. Eventually, any plastic will break down due to UV. That why you dash fade, your seats, your pant, and so on.

Re: lexan windows
Plexiglass with 20% tint would be nice, it would probably take forever to get foggy.
|
Re: lexan windows
you can drape form lexan with aheat gun and your oringal windows, works good
|
Re: lexan windows
a old pizza oven works also for drape forming.
Instead of 500F just use 200F temp settings. |
Re: lexan windows
Tint doesn't bond to Plexi or lexan very well. It's not forulated too, It will buble off in a few months.
You can buy tinted plexiglass that has the colour right in the glass |
Re: lexan windows
PLexi glass does fog up. My family has some heav machinar with that on it for laying pipe. After about a year on the side of raods it had a yellowish fog to it.
COuldnt you use some sort of spray on thin hardcore glue to bond it to the plexi/lexan? |
Re: lexan windows
Just to be sure, you know you can't do your windshield in Lexan right? Your windshield is actually a big player in the rigidity and strength for the body of your car. Also, it wouldn't be legal to drive/race anywhere. you can replace any other window, but for the hassle, and minimal weight savings, I wouldn't suggest it. Plus if you do your hatch window, you'll have no defrost, making it even harder to see through... ;)

Re: lexan windows
On a 4g, the windows are flat on the sides, I think. So that would work in your favor for doing the side ones.
I don't think it is worth it though, unless you are already having to replace the windows. |
Re: lexan windows
You must have some sort of a death wish to do your side windows in lexan or plexi glass, there is a reason we call car windows safety glass, it is ment to shatter on impact so your head dosnt bust open like a watermellon.
Think about the consiquences before you do something stupid, its not worth the time anyways to bend the plastic to the shape of the glass, It will never keep its shape like glass does, and it till never seal properly, and once again, in the event of an accident, if your head comes in contact with it at high velocity, say bye bye to your brain, you'll either be knocked unconcious or killed instantly. Look at the little H symbol on your steering wheel, Its there to remind you of what youre driving, unless this car is your RACE car and you have one seat and a harness and will be wearing a helmet every time youre in it, I wouldnt do it. |
Re: lexan windows
I don't see any problem with running lexan in teh back and no side windows on a drag set-up. The cage will take care of a lot of the strength, and the net windows are lighter than anything.

People do use it as their windshield in drag racing, the problem is, once you start going fast, it starts coming in on you, it's crazy lol, so you either gotta go back to the stock glass, or add a bunch of supports in (see nascar windsheilds) |
Re: lexan windows
If your head has no where to go, you'll get knocked the ---- out, Go suck a dick spenser.

Re: lexan windows
Get a set of FAL windows.
|
Re: lexan windows
is it REALLY worth all the time & effort installing them?? what is the real purpose of them, is all the glass accually heavy enough to make a differnce?
|
Re: lexan windows
Well, rallycross here allows lexan windows all around except in the windshield. You can't use windshield wipers on a plastic windshield.
