Indexing Question
 

Help me noggs, I made an error in indexing the head and the block. i know I suck. But I put the no. 1 slug at TDC with the timing belt removed and when I tried to turn the cam gear it got really tight. Please tell me I dont have to pull the head to index it. BTW its a stock block and head D16A6 w/Z6 H/G. I was gonna pu tthe T/belt back on and crank it until the cam gear was in position then remove the belt and put the crank at TDC. :1

You don't have to pull the head. Rotate your crank a bit so you don't have any pistons at the top of the bore (trial and error if you must) then put your cam to TDC. Then put your crank back to TDC.

Just took jago's advice. Thanks. I got the indexing problem fixed. ::) Now I have 60psi C/R. :l
What? I really hope I didnt damage the valves when I cranked the car with the index incorrect. I think Im gonna try again tomorrow. Any input would be appreciated.

You cranked the engine over? Are you saying you with a wrench or socket turned it over or you turned the key and the starter turned it over for you?

Yea when I said rotate the crank a bit I meant by hand, who knows how much it will turn if you turn the key :S

If you turned the engine with the starter there is a chance that you smacked your valves and now need a valve job; then you would have to take your head off ;)

First off I wanna say thanks to all of you at HMT. I am almost finished with my setup. I ran it today and although I have no downpipe it ran smoothly, I even took it down the road to get fresh fuel. I love the sound. Im waiting for some additional piping from Adam at Racing Solutions. They should get to me by Friday, or Monday the latest.
Back to the car, I had 180, 180, 150, 180 (not exactly) C/R after I rebuilt the entire block. I was blowing smoke from the exhaust, and after a wet compression test I decided to install new piston rings because I had the oil pan removed to weld a bung for the oil return line (T3 from the Westcoast turbo) .
So I put a Z6 gasket with ARP studs and when I indexed the engine I made an error. So, I took Jago's advice and dropped the pistons from TDC. I indexed the engine correctly and installed the T/Belt. Anxiously, I performed another C/R test and the figures were VERY low. Then I remembered the the block had no oil in it for a week or two. I installed the plugs and fired it up and let it idle for a miniute.
I ran yet another C/R test and the outcome was the same as before I replaced the new piston rings. (180,180,150,180)
Oh well. :'( :'(
Im gonna do a leak down test to trace the leak and Im thinking its the valves that are giving me the problem.
Im gonna finish the T3 setup and Im gonna get pics for you. Its looking pretty neat. Im concerned about the car being stolen so Im working on that also. (I wanna be one step ahead if you know whatIm talking about.)

Squirt some oil in that low cylinder and see if it goes up... If it does its your rings not sealing, if it doesnt change much its probably valves, but a leak down test will isolate it for sure.

Ok this gets worse. I just ran a comp. test and the results are 180, 180, 60, 180. Thats not good. The 60psi cylinder is the one I just replaced the rings. After doing a wet comp. test it went up to 75psi. Im gonna do a leak down test to see if its the head thats causing the low #s. Im really hoping I dont have to pull the piston out again. But I will if i have to. This is very frustrating. :'(

if it only went up 15psi after adding fluid to the cylinder, you more than likely bent a valve. Definatly time to bust out the leak down tester and stethoscope to see where its leaking.
