inconsistant leaking

so i had a leak on my intake manifold, so i change the gasket and everything and it stopped leakin, then there was an oil leak and i think it was comin from the oil filter gasket, so as i was takin off the oil filter some coolant started randomly leaking. so i was wonderin why it would be leak, then stop. there is still tons of coolant in there and it is plenty high.

thanx

the coolant was leaking from the oil filter?

Re: inconsistant leaking

Yeah I am confused, is there coolant from the oil filter? Or is there coolant comming out of the TB/IACV?

Just get more detailed.

ya more details .... i think your try'n to say it started leaking from the intake mani again .. i dunno waiting for your response

maybe try a blacklight, i think coolant will glow under a blacklight and you might be able to pin point the leak. Otherwise you'll have to get your hands on a leak light kit. They come with dye's you can put in fluids so you can see where they're leaking from.

Re: inconsistant leaking

^ ok ill try that.

and to clarify, it was leaking coolant, i change the intake mani gasket, then it stopped, then i realized that there was an oil leak that i think was comin from the oil filter, so i took off the oil filter, and also tightened all my oil fittings, but still havent put the oil filter back on yet.

but i was wondering about the coolant leak, because first i fixed it and it wasnt leakin, then when i started to fix the oil leak, coolant just started to drip on me again. then when i stopped workin on it, coolant wasnt leakin anymore, and it was still almost completely full.

what kind of car is it, it could be the oil cooler coolent hose thats leaking

Re: inconsistant leaking

96 civic. like my id.

yea thats a big possibility. ill check that today, after i put the oil filter back on.

There are a couple of coolant lines in that area that could be leaking. Pinch + pull gently on them with a good light source and all will be revealed.

OH YAH don't forget to inspect the coolant bypass tube that comes out of the waterpump and runs along the back of the block to the thermostat housing.

Re: inconsistant leaking

^ yeah i checked that when i had the mani off.

i havent had time to work on it. im more worried about the oil leak, but im sure ill have that down. i already tightened all my fittings, and bought a new oil filter, it was hopefully just the oil filter gasket, but we'll see.

last time i started it the idle was still a little bouncy too. from like 1500-1700 maybe. it used to be like 1200-2000 so i guess its gettin better. could be the fact that i have 7 month old 89 octane gas in it :o

thanx for all the replies. ill get back to you guys whens shes done.

Block off the FITV, and make sure the cooling system is bled thoroughly.

Re: inconsistant leaking

its a y7 throttle body on the z6 im, so there is no fitv.

Re: inconsistant leaking

Huh.

Well, I was shooting for cosmetic idle stuff with that comment, nothing that really addresses your leak.

There's a coolant hose going from TB, into IACV, then out and down under the mani to the bypass tube along the back of the block. You think if it was leaking a touch, it would promote air in the IACV causing simultaneously your idle problem and your leak?

Naaaah... it's always harder, much harder.

Re: inconsistant leaking

^ haha, yeah it is always harder. thats why its been like 7 months since ive even driven the car.

i guess i fixed the coolant leak, and the oil leak. i put a new oil filter on and started her up, and for a few minutes there were no leaks at all. but i can hear a boost leak i think. cuz i guess it could be the hiss of the turbo spooling since i have no dp. but it sounds like its comin from near or under the intake mani. so thats probably the cause, or one of the causes of the bouncy idle.

im just glad i fixed the other leaks, and fixed the really bad idle. hopefully i find the boost leak soon.

so im gonna try to drive my car tomorrow sometime after class, and before work.

hopefully i can get it to a gas station to put some 91 at least in it. its got like 7 month old 89 right now.

that is the coolant temp-activated fast idle valve you're referring to right? what does that acronym stand for? i was going to suggest that next

Re: inconsistant leaking

^ i think it stands for Fast Idle Throttle Valve

but my y7 throttle body does not have one.

oh and its not leakin coolant anymore, just oil again from god knows where.

Check the cam seals and crank seals for the oil leakage..
