Ignition Timing. No marks on crank pulley..
 

I just swapped the head on my a6 with another one and I'm trying to set the ignition timing, but when I have the timing light flashing on the crank pulley, I can't see any marks. It's not just me, I had the guy across the street that is a mechanic look and he couldn't see any either. Can they wear off? They might just be covered up and caked with crap. If so, what would be the easiest way to clean it without removing the pulley?

maybe spray some "Brake Clean" down onto the pulley where the marks are and se eif that cleans any of the crap off of it. I've never seen the marks just wear off, but that could make it quite the bitch to get timing set correctly. Let us know what you find.

I could barely see mine, so I took a piece of chald and marked up the middle red line real good, then I could easily see it.

there are little grooves on the pully, feel around until you find them then chalk them.

clean the pulley and then slowly turn it with a wrence/rachet. You should be able to catch your finger nail in the groves of the pulley where the timing marks are. You should have one for TDC and three closer tougheter for your 14/16/18 BTDC marks. Good luck. stefan525

I believe my ZC only has one mark on the pulley. and then abunch of the plastic cover thing.
