Ignition breakup revisited
 
Since the summer I've had an ignition breakup problem. It only occurs under full throttle, at full boost (~8 psi). It will occur anywhere from 4000-7000 rpms. Basically the car will misfire for a moment, then feel fine, then misfire. When this happen it really slows the car down due to the lack of smooth revving while under boost. This only happens SOMETIMES. Sometimes it will pull nice and hard all the way to redline without a single problem. Here are a few things I know

1. It's not my bin
2. Not the distributor/ignitor. I swapped the entire distributor for a known good one and the problem still occurs sometimes.

All I can think of is maybe the plug wires. I was thinking that it couldn't be them because it only happens under full boost, but then I realized it could be happening because of high rpms, because I'm only in high rpms when under full boost.

Anybody else think that it could just be my wires? I don't wanna spend $50 to try it out and find the problem is still there.

whats the gap? have you tried new plugs?

hmmm just ohm out the plug wires, then youll know if those are good, the specs are right on the side of them of tolerable ohms, and i second the plug idea, temperature?, gap? seems funny that it peaces the ---- out at high rpms, sounds like a plug temperature issue, but hey could be the plug wires, get that ohm meter out :y

Using BKR7E plugs, worked flawlessly in my previous setup. Gapped at .030" initially, I also tried .028" and that did not fix the problem. I also replaced the plugs with new ones and it still happens.

I will try that. Could it also be possible that the resistance is within spec but somehow a crappy connection on one or more of them could cause this?

sure could, check "snugness" of each end. also check cap/rotor.

So basically, I just wanted confirmation that plug wires could be causing this. Sounds like I will give it a shot, unless anybody else has more ideas to offer?

jago i had a similar problem back in the day with my old d15b vtec

when i floored it it would lag for 2 seconds then be fine
if you hold it at full throttle long enough itll go back to normal and it will only do it once every startup

I never found the problem but I would check the tps.
Are you throwing any codes? I never knew if i had codes because the person that sold me the car had unhooked the cel.
Plug wires do no solve the problem...

I don't have any codes. This problem is different than yours, I floor it and it pulls just fine instantly, but when it build up to full boost and is in the higher rpm range this happens. Most likely not a TPS problem.

Well, like I said, I swapped the entire distributor with a known good one from my previous setup. So cross your fingers with me and hope it's the plug wires ;)
