lmao! funny you mention that! i did that yesterday to my buddies car (no hoist ). we jacked up the back of the car (high) then lowered the front of the car onto a a little wagon type thing then let the engine go into that and jacked the front of the car up enough so we could slide the engine out from underneath. it works!!! it's only a two person job too.

The best way to do it is use some of those ratchet straps and 2 long steel bars with padding on the end then just unhook everything and lower it with the ratchet straps. I Used 2 bars to a weight bench. It held up fine did the tranny on my lil bros eclipse and dropped the whole engine out of my dads vr4 worked like a charm both times

what my frined said is to jack up the car.
all the way up until it max out the jackstand height.
loosen mounts, support it with a jack, unbolt mount.
lower jack, pull out motor and put it back the same way...
going to do it on Sunday...pry to teh ultimate racing god for me.

here are some pics of my hydrolocked b18a, blew out the front and the back, the culprit was a long *** cold air intake on a slammed car with no splash guard in a deep puddle :P

my buddy had a 94 civic EX with an AEM CAI.. drove home in a bad rain storm one night, said the car made a loud boom and shut off.

we got the engine torn apart, well obviously we noticed the huge hole in teh front and back of the block, but it snapped #3 rod in half, busted the girdle in half, dented the oilpan, and eventually it went out the front and back of the engine, or rather the impact busted the rear, and it shot out the front.
