how to tell if my altenator is going out?

i have been haveing a problem with my car lights and gauge cluster dimming. i usually notice it when i let off the gas my lights will get brighter. i checked all my grounds and they all look good, i even took some off and cleaned where they contact the metal and nothing changed. does anybody know any easy way to see if my altenator is going bad?

get a multimeter/volt meter, put one end to ground, one end to the 10mm/stud on the back of the alternator. You shouldnt get less then 13.2v at idle and be sure when you rev it, it doesnts drop below 13.0

Or a real cheese way of doing it, that somewhat works, just take off the negitive battery terminal while the car is running, it should stay running no matter what, if it dies, well.. then you more than likly need a alternator =)
