how strong are d15's?

hey guys im curious, how strong are d15 motors? im guessing a bit weaker than d16's but i see guys running some good boost on the jdm d15 motors. Im thinking i might use my spare d15 just as a test motor, but i wont if it's gonna pop immediatly, thats not worth my time. The motor is a 160K mile d15b7 it always ran very strong and never burned or leaked anything. I would run the IHI rhb5 turbo at stock 8lb wastegate, hf mani, walbro pump, 450cc injectors, afc , small fmic, some sort of a turboedit map for my chipped ecu, maby a little dyno tuning.

Having a ride on a Boosted JDM D15 @ 8 PSI was what made me think of boost and boost my D16 motor. That thing pulled really nice.

It was D15 Vtec

my d15b7 is currently boosted. 6psi with a fmu on DPFI :o with no problems. stock timing

Re:how strong are d15's?

it depends on a lot of factors, so a definate number of miles can be given before it 'pops'. If it's a spare I say go for it, it'll give you some tuning experience... so ditch the hack and go with a chipped ecu, when the d15 does go You'll have a good grasp on street tuning and what not to do.

15 seconds at 23 psi

Re:how strong are d15's?

well outa for engines ive had so far the two that blew were d15's. i think they suck balls but if you only boost a lil bit unlike my ass then it might last you a while. ;)

ran a D15B2 with MPFI conversion for 2 month's at 14 psi...with the hack on a PM7 ZC ecu...running pretty rich.
Toyota CT20 turbo AR .42 comp...compressor was as big as a T3 AR .42 I measured it and had it side to side with a T3...

that makes me laugh. where you like, "hmm how much boost? awh eff it 14 psi it is" is it still in action?

i had a d15b7 in my 95 dx. didnt know what was done to it but it had major balls. kept up with a 99 si until mid 3rd gear. i boosted the b7 with the rhb5 and reached full boost around 3500rpms. then i got turbo happy and messed around with a mbc and cranked it up toi 15psi (accidently) and smashed 1st gear and 2nd gear then 3rd gear kaboom!

Re:how strong are d15's?

I didn't want to run 14 psi though...it was actually 1 bar.
Think the turbine housing was so small the thing kept on spooling when passing 5500 rpm's.(wastegate was set at 7 psi)
Small internal wastegate hole etc...
I raped it like I wanted to break it...actually i wanted to blow it up but it didn't....3rd gear and 4 gear 14 psi pulls are nice...sometime it hit limp mode at lika 7K rpm's lol...those were scary thought the motor blew a few times, but it didn't.
eventually I sold the car afterwards....without the turbo kit. A lady hit me from behind and I got my insurance money sold the car and bought an '89 EF si...just because parts for it are cheaper and more abundant and I'm still a college student...

are you serious..?<:D

i boosted my d15b2 w/14b@11psi with 329,000 kms running uberdata... lasted less than 3 months when it lost too much compression... i've been led to believe that shorter rod stroke is better at high rpms

project ej2 08-10-2009 01:58 AM

ohh ok thanks man..

project ej2 08-10-2009 02:03 AM

what would you suggest for my d15 non-v. guys help me out. ive got my turbo and its a big DSM turbo.. would you suggest to upgrade besides my injectors..? HELP thanks peopleS...and will my motor handle it, safely.?

2BarRacing 08-11-2009 04:34 PM

ok everyone is throwing around psi as how much psi well lets look at in HP a d15 should and i say that loosely because i dont know the condition of your motor handle 200whp so go for that not how much psi.

turbof22a 08-13-2009 09:24 PM

i havent had an accord in 2+ years. it was 93 with a dsm manifold and 14b

jdmontheway 08-21-2009 11:21 PM

10 pounds of boost stock internals

jdmontheway 08-21-2009 11:21 PM

correct me if im wrong

MBENZTECH 08-23-2009 08:21 PM

I had a D15 that took a lot of ---- from from N/a to boosted. I sold it and the guy blew a rod through the block using a dry 80 shot of NOS.

MBENZTECH 08-23-2009 08:22 PM

I guess every motor is different! You can't expect a little single cam to withstand too much boost or NOS.

ZMX 10-05-2009 02:15 AM

Go over 170HP for long and boom! The connecting rods on the D15s are thinner than your pinky.

bulletproof1013 10-05-2009 05:25 PM

my d15b running 6-8 psi no tune no boom yet (2 years)

kona447 10-05-2009 11:12 PM

i got my d16z6 recently boosted with an fmu ... runs clean as hell .. i dont think u shud go to high tho like over 8psi ?

turbof22a 10-06-2009 12:17 AM

this thread is 5 years old

Turbodhatch 10-06-2009 12:40 AM

its good though cause i just got my hands on a ef hatch with a d15 that im going turbo on it as i type

honda-chaser 10-18-2009 11:59 AM

all d-series are the same just differ liter size, it just how you build it, and how you drive it....I had a turbo d16z6 semi built boostin 12psi, had no prolem what so ever, thing ran like a champ...only problem I had was that damn aem crank pully kept comin off...due to no damper from all that vibration.
