How to replace rings??

i need to replace my piston rings before i boost, so i was wondering how, and if is a huge pain in the ass. or if i should just have it done,(witch costs $$ that i don't have) just need a little input, i have decent mechanical skill, never fucked with internals though. thanx for any input.

properly done u need th remove the entire engine. it has to be re-honed (maybe bored to fix egg shape cylinders). basically machine work needed. new rings, new bearings/seals.

its not like changing a head gasket or a spark plug thats for sure.

if just the rings are toast and you dont feel like replacing other things (like bearings)...the bare bones way to do it is to leave the motor in the car, pull the pistons, hone the cylinders, and reverse the steps, keeping the stock bearings in their original positions.

Re: How to replace rings??

its just the #1 piston ring that burns the oil, so i figured i should replace all of them. how long of a project do you think this would be??

and how much more work would it be to put in new pistons and rods too?? what types can i swap to be more dependable under boost?? or do i need aftermarket?? thanx

Re: How to replace rings??

This could be a full day to two day project unless you're a crazy pyscho like some people on this forum and do in like 4-6 hours with acouple buddies. First of all we have no idea what kind of car you are working, engine, ect so it'd be nice to tell us so we can give you input. That and the fact we don't know how much boost you want to run so that we could give you an idea if you need aftermarket rods and pistons. But if you don't have money to get your rings professionally done then i don't see how'd you have the money to get aftermarket rods and pistons they can be rather expensive. ;) Anyways it'd be alot easier with the engine out of the car rather then in but in the car saves alot of time but can add more of a hassle in my opinion.

Find a spare block and do all of this, then swap the block. You don't want to try to do this while it's in the car. :-\

yeah if its as bad as your saying... looks like you wanna do this right, not have to do it again after 500 miles on boost

first off i have a 95civic ex d16z6, i would like to run like 7-8 psi. second i was wondering if i could get rods and pistons from another honda engine that would improve power handling.

lastly i live in south bend indiana, blocks are kinda hard to come by. thanx for the idea though.

Re: How to replace rings??

actually i think i may be able to find a block for cheep-azz, this import shop that went out of business,(because the ower stole alot of peoples money, including mine) is selling everything left in the building for cheap. i think they have one honda block, but i'm not sure if its a D15 or D16. they have a -----ton of DSM stuff though. mostly 1st gen too.
