they have springs...they push the two parts of it into the gears and put pressure on them. the less those gears spin independantly, the more evenly your wheels spin
One of my friends and I decided to weld the diff in his Si tranny for the 1/4 mile...worked great at the track, but snapped an axle coming back home...i won't weld another one again.
