How to: D-series Alternator on a B-series

I was looking through some old pics on a LS/VTEC I did for a friend and saw the pics of how I put his d-series alternator on the b-series block. It worked out great and is still working great after some time now.

Here is a b-series alternator. Notice that the mounting holes are offset. The d alternator has the holes aligned in the center. If you tried to use a d alternator, the back of it would hit the block and the top mounting hole wouldn't line up with the upper bracket.

Here is how it is done. The stock b-series bracket (bronze one) is left in its place. The silver bracket is the d-series alternator bracket. You use a 14mm bolt and nut and space out the d bracket. You now have the original d bracket to which the d alternator can bolt to.

Pretty easy and with stock honda parts. The first spacer is actually from a bottom alternator bracket. It has bushings in it. Just pop one out from an unused bracket, and you have the first one. Then I just used a couple of washers to space it out some more.

Here are some more pics.

Ya OBD2 plugs are OBD2 plugs regardless of the engine. It made it easy for me since the motor was OBD2 and the OG motor was OBD1. We didn't have an OBD1 b-series alternator so using the OBD2 b-series one would have meant hacking more wires (changing the OBD1 alt plug to the OBD2 one) than neccesary.

Awesome How-To. Alternators are way overpriced. My old d series alternators may be worth keeping around after all.

I have a quick related question: Will any B series alternator bolt up to any B series motor? Ex: Will the alternator from my B18a1 bolt up to my B18c1? I'll be doing the swap as soon and the b18c alternator is seized. If I had a spare alternator around I could match it up, but no such luck.
