Homemade internal balancing

I remember seeing a thread a while back about balancing your rods/pistons at home but can't find it through search. Does anybody have any tips or have a link to the thread?

Re: Homemade internal balancing

go and buy a nice scale that has grams on it put each piston and rod on it and weigh each 1 at a time and shave material off till the all way the same..

good read

Thanks for that link. I'm mainly concerned where the best place to remove material from is.

the best place on the rods would be from the sides and the pistons builders usually remove material from the underside of the piston by either sanding or drilling small holes

so if i got what that article said, you balance rotating after you get the pistons to within like, 5 grams of each other, same with rods, then balance the crank, in that sort of order, because the journal end of the rod rotates, the pistons reciprocates, and if you balance the reciprocating end, it makes weird vibrations.

I'm probably just going to say ---- it and not balance ----, but it's nice to know.

yes you would want to have your components within a couple grams of each other then assemble the bottom end with eveything attached including flywheel and balance the whole assembly.

from what my machinist told me when doing my z6 vitara build, since we have "flat" cranks there is no need to balance the crank, just match the weight of each rod/piston/pin/clip/ring combo with each other and you're golden. My 13 psi 8,000rpm panty rippers dont seem to mind it so its all good with me.

Thanks for the input ;)

This is ultra low budget actually, I don't plan on replacing much of anything at all other than rods, pistons, bearings, HG, and some seals.

I asked the machine shop this q and he told me that simply the big end of the rods must all weigh the same, and the small end of the rods must all weigh the same.
Additionally, all rods must all have the same weight
I figured this can be achieved by holding the opposite end with a pencil and laying the other end onto a small scale. (But thats just my idea, this may not work)

theroetically it could work but is is just easier to weigh the whole rod itself and go from there.

i just took my ---- to the machine shop. i got pistons and rods balanced to .5 grams of each other and crank balanced to 14k

it was pretty cheap

Re: Homemade internal balancing

full rotating assembly balance is 65 bucks which is cheap considering if you ---- it up your out a g or so depending on what your building

i would be more interested in diy balancing. the machine shops around here charge out the butt for it.
