Homemade hot tank?

Not really, but I'm just gonna soak the block in a tupperware bin because the local shop charges $50 for an acid bath, and the last block I took there I could still wipe oil/dirt off of it with my finger when they were done.

The question is, what's the best chemical to use?

tim used purple rush (commercial non------ version of purple power) on his block, took it to the carwash, and it looked like it was hot tanked.

I used said rubbermaid bin and soaked in purple power overnight. Gave it a good brushing with a nylon brush then hosed off. It came out good enough for me. I usually soak parts in silicone spray after drying to prevent rusting too.

Draino cleans the best, but wear gloves, and don't leave the block into very long.........it'll start eating the block also :)

TSP (Tri Sodium Phosphate) might work too.

i always liked oven cleaner, but you cant soak it in it. i just coat the block real nice and leave it for 10min or so then pressure wash. repeat

Yeah this was a 235k block fresh from the car complete with an inch of oily crud in some spots. It looks minty fresh now just make sure you wear a plastic garbage bag and maybe take a grinding shield cause my eyes burned for a couple days after.
