most alternators are interchangable, my brother has my old dx alternator on his b16, we just had to use the 3 rib belt instead of the 4 rib.

Re:hf and dx/si ASAP!!

If your batt light came on more than likely its the alt brushes, you can put new alt brushes in for about 12 bucks, and you alternator is good as new. if this is a route you want to take, post a reply, and ill talk you through it

it's easier if you unbolt the brake master cylinder from the booster and pull that out of the way.

Ya its pretty tight. If youve got the alt out, you should replace the brushes anyway, it would suck for you to run that alt. that tests good, and have it quit three weeks down the road, and have to do it all over. It only takes a soldergun, a couple of other tools, and about half an hour.

Re:hf and dx/si ASAP!!

the hf came out like a bitch. but the dx one fell right out i didnt have to fight it. there are noticable differences in size between the hf and the dx. dx way bigger. is the amperage the same? i think i wanna go ahead and rebuild my alt. so if anyone could help that would be great.

k, first off, get the brushes from your local parts, or honda dealer parts place. then you need an eight mm, and a ten mm sockets preferalby deep. set the alt in a vice( dont squeeze!! ) with the pulley down. remove the eight mm (dont rember how many??)frome the back cover. ( the one with the plug seen comming through). then carefully so you dont break the plastic, take the ten mm out of the positive batt connection. Remove cover. in the center youll see the end of the shaft through what looks like a rubber insalator. on each side of it there is a phillips screw (2) make sure you use a #2 phillips driver. they are usually tight. dont strip them or your screwed.(literally)
then pull the brush holder out.( the thing that was held down by the screws)

Re:hf and dx/si ASAP!!

stripped screws are a bitch so be careful like he said. I stripped 2 screws on my ecu cover and just cut a flat head groove with a hacksaw.

Re:hf and dx/si ASAP!!

so once you get the holder out, you got to remove the brushes. heres a trick, instead of using the solder gun to melt the solder( unless you have solder wik, or a solder sucker, then theres no point to this trick) use a drill, and drill two small holes in the solder holding the brush cables. when i say small, i mean 1/16 to 3/32, but make sure you break the cable. this leaves you witha nice hole for the new brush cable. now be careful when you cut the cables. because the brushes are spring loaded. do not loose the springs!!!. you need those. now use the new brushes and insert the cable through the center of the spring and into the holder and out the hole. heres another trick...pull the cable untill the brush is just starting to enter the holder(about 1/8 inch) inside. then take a small pair of vice grips, or hemostats, and clamp the cable to the screw eyelet. this will hold the cable at the right length so that you can solder the cable with both hands free. do this to each brush, then your done with the holder. to install the brush holder back into the alt, first push one brush into the holder then slide it down into the cavity beside the alt shaft. once its inplace(halfway there) then push the second one in, then wiggle the holder down into place.
reinstall the screws and cover and your done.

ohh ya, dont forget to trim the excess cable after soldering. Have fun!!

if you wait till tomarrow afternoon, ill bring home a brush holder and take some pictures for visual reference of course.
