Default Help with timming a 93 Civic... I think I bent a valve....

So its been one thing after another while replacing the HG. I dont have the pistions @ TDC and I dont know how to set the cam timming. When I did start it, it made a noise, not valve ticking, not knock, a sort of muffled dull tick (not valve tick, but maybe). It did it when it first started. Then went away.... So I was like ok bent valve... But then I started it again and it didnt make the noise until 20 sec after the car had been started... I dunno what I have done. I cant seem to set the cam timming and I cant pull the T-Belt to get the pistion to TDC. I need HELP!!! This is my sisters car and I have to get it going ASAP! If the valves are bent, I have a head off a 91 DX that I can put on there. Will it fit? I'd assume it would since they use the same HG. I tried setting the timming with the cam gear UP pointing up and lining up the small triangle up with the has mark on the cam gear the first time.
tia for the help I need so much. I think I got in over
my head on this one...

ok. there is a red dot on the crank pully. take the driver's side wheel off. and turn the crank till the red dot it pointing up. then point the cams straight up. with the up arrow. stick a nail or allen wrench in their little holes, so the cams won't move. then put the timing belt on. and it should be right

Well thats that thing, its a SOHC engine... So there isnt any hole in the cam(s) like on the DOHC engines.

thanks

There should be lines on each side also that you need to line up with the head. The arrow/mark on the cam gear needs to face up, the crank needs to be at TDC and the lines on the side of the cam gear need to aline with the head.

ok...let me show you the old school way of finding tdc. it should be the white mark thats by itself on the crank. not the red or ones next to it. now...if the head is already off on timing....just turn the crank by HAND(not starter) till the cam gear has the "UP" straight up. then take off the timing belt from the gear. now...you can turn the crank till the white line lines up with the mark OR you can do it my taking out the 1ST spark plug. then you put a hanger(cloths hanger) or something skinny and long down the hole till it touches the piston head. then as you turn the crank, when the hanger reaches to top or highest peak, thats TDC. that should be exactly on the white mark on the crank. now remember...this is the old school way that they use to use on the domestics. it also works for hondas too. now...on sohc NON vtec motors....the "UP" isnt straight up. its kinda more towards one way depending on your motor. you gotta let us know which motor it is or find where the mark is in a manual. if your off by 1 tooth on that..it'll throw you off on timing by 9.xx degree. good luck
