Default HELP!! Timing issue

I replaced the headgasket on my 86 toyota truck (22r) and I think the timing chain might have skipped a tooth. I put the motor at tdc and set the distributor right and it isn't starting. the exhaust mani isn't all the way tightened down and there are flames coming out when it cranks. I really really don't want to pull the front cover to check my work... is there any thing else I can do to check or make it work before I redo all the timing?

**********
If the top timing gear isn't on the chain, is it physically possible for the chain to jump a link on the crank pulley below or is there too much ---- in the way for it to get messed up?
