HEAD GASKET JOB GONE WRONG!!!! PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!

ok ... so here it is ... before i took the head off (crx si) i had.... #1- 200 #2-200 #3-200 #4-150 .................. my brother said it was blowing white smoke out of the car, but i never saw it ran to see if it was white or white/blue ... well, i took the head off and cleaned off the head gasket real nice .... and i got myself a 3 ply y8 headgasket and torqued it down to 50lbs, via the helm book ........ now i havent tried to start the car, but my ------- compression is fucked!!!!!! #1 - 140 #2 - 120 #3- 200 #4- 155 WHAT THE ---- DID I DO WRONG?????? |

are you sure you did the test right? you probly did somthing wrong, or forgot something. was your battery fully charged?
at least #3 is still good :P |

put a teaspoon of oil in each cyl and test again.

well compresion test are pretty easy .... and im sure i did it right, i checked it twice ....
isnt the teaspoon of oil thing just to check out if the rings are blown????? cause i had fine compression in those first 3 cylinders before i started .... |

reusing head bolts?? If so torque it down to 65lb....no more then 75lb

i am reusing headbolts ... i just torqued down to 60lbs with no real compression increases ..... do you think i should go farther??? 70lbs????

I had 120-90-90-120 on my engine after putting a head with a fresh gasket I retorqued it to 60...bumped only a few psi I got it torque to 72 lb. 200 psi all accross ;D
But the engine is dead now...Rod went thru the block...hole in the block at the front. And the engine was NA think it was the unbalanced shaved flywheel that didn't really fit the old ZC with the pilot bearing, cause the old ZC doesn't have a groove for the pilot bearing and my pulley old school pulley that doesn't have a harmonic dampner. |

I would keep adding a pount of torque till around 72lbs. and see if you can fix it....
I have never had this problem, but it seems like when people re-use head bolts, ---- happens. I know that re-used head bolts arent as strong as new ones, so, try to tighten them down a little more... |

the Y8 gasket will work.
all i can think of 1)check cam timing? 2)correctly adjusted valve lash? 3)torked bolt in CORRECT sequeance(sp :P) ? 4)did u go WOT while checking compression? and finally ARE YOUR SURE THE GAUGE IS WORKING? |

If you got coolant, fuel or??? in the cylinders and have not ran it yet it is normal. Dont panic about the comp #'s till you get it running first, then check it. :P

hopefully you won't have to tear that head off again 3 months down the road like i had to... |

well ... the motor started .... ran like ass!!!!
i got a code 6 and a code 16 even after resetting the ecu .... i let it run for about a minute and shut her down .... afteward the compression test resulted in the same shitty numbers.... there was alot of oil on the block ... on the #4 cylinder, where the problem began in the first place ... i noticed at the first flange(2 piece header) it was wet at the flange... i ripped the header off to see moisture, which im guessing was oil in the #4 runner ... it quickly evaporated before my eyes.... the #4 plus was wet and pretty black/oily like ... the car did not smoke at all though??? not from the exhaust.... is it possible the car did not warm up enough???? ...... i did not refill it with coolant yet and obviosly the water pump would not kick in before reaching high enough temps .... when i installed the head the coolant level was over an inch under the top of the sleeves... leafin me to belive that it is not coolant that is leaking, being that there should be no coolant head.... so what can we be looking at????? blown rings???? can bad valve guides dump this sort of oil???? and all in all what the ---- would be throwing my code 16????, and none of this yet adds up to why i have shitty compression in cylinders #1 and #2 my first head gasket change that should be rutine ..... and its turned into a nightmare???? could it never had been the headgasket from the start???? and y do i have shitty compression in #1 and #2 ..... i swear, ive got more problems that a blind kid playing Duck Hunt!!! |

u said you cleaned the old gasket "really nice", how nice is realy nice? those old paper gaskets are a pain in the ass to clean. if there was any left it could cause the leaks around the block and mess up you compression too

oh and code 6 is your water temp sensor that goes on the side of the cylinder head and code 16 is one of your fuel injectors. make sure their plugged in right mang. thats probably y the car ran like ----

ya your right, double check your wiring. those codes dont have nothing to do with the compression. fix those codes,then see how it runs. if its leaking out the sides of the block it sounds like your just gona have to do it over :-\ i know that sucks major balls, ive been there

im gonna try one last time with a diffrent head ..... none off this adds up .... and doesnt it seem fishy that im still getting oild problem in the same exact cylinder as before i went to do the gasket????
ive read how to do mini me swaps and do an ls/b20 vtec a thousand times!!!! im really not a moron but at this point i feel like one ... trust me i love this ---- guys ... i would sit there and ---- with this forever .... but this is my brothers car .... when i brought my hatch back from the dead after it was stolen with junkyard parts i had both time and money.... and these small obsticals didnt bother me the least ..... but this is my bros daily driver ... and now i have no time and no money... im having a baby very shortly.... nad ive shelled out $$$ for a torque wrench, a dememl, a head gasket, and a few other little things for this project .... and i just cant keep giving out money and my time is running short ..... blah .. ok im whining like a bitch now ... ill stop .... gonna get some rest ..... tomorrows another day................. |

Those tools...you'll use them again.
Maybe you do have blown rings in cilinder 4. Did you check the valva clearance...you took the head of so you must check the valve clearance and set it right. Maybe the head needs to be milled though. |

well i am taking the head back off .... when i did the water test on the #4 chamber while the head was off, i did get some leakage out the exhaust valve ...
im water tesing a dx head right now that came off the original motor that was in the way .... im going to pull the head back off and check the head and the deack with a straight edge and see if i got warpage on my hands..... and i guess ill take it from there .... |

get a REALLY REALLY sright edge and use feeler gauge...
and look for wrapage limit from your lovely manual :-* |

Sounds to me liek your doing alot more work then you need to, a new head is not going to fix your problem.. i would just fix the injector ---- and run it for a little bit and see if your leaks stop...
