Head Bolt Torque
 
Before you yell at me to search most of the articles are for mini-me head swaps and zc's.

I've blown my head gasket, taken off my the heads and put the head back on the block. I don't want to blow this one any time soon, soooo. I want to know what to torque the head bolts to. Stock I know you do them in sequence between 22 ft/lbs to 47 ft/lbs. I want to give them a little more squish on the head gasket to take the higher compression. But I definitely don't want to break them(the bolts, especially in the block). What do you guys recommend?

My buddy has an older 87 turbo supra running 19psi, he torqued his to 85 ft/lbs which I think is rediculously high. But he also blows head gaskets like his mom blows $#%&!! ;D hehehe

If it helps, prolly would the setup is
b16, 8psi from a 14b stock engine, pretty much.

If i remember right for a stock head its 22ft/lb to 47 ft/lb to 68 ft/lb. dont froget to tq them in the correct sequence!

I blew a few too many HG's. So I ended up torquing mine to 60ft/lbs. Not saying you should too, but that's what I did.

Onyx, For what engine? The book I have tells me to stop at 47 ft/lbs.

nyc86zc, you torqued a zc (assuming 'cause of your name) down to 60. You didn't sheer a head off!!!

Yeah I torqued it down to ~65ft/lbs because the HG was blown and I already replaced it 3 times. I left the blown one there and just torqued the HB to 65. It still leaked a little but wasn't too bad. I put about a quart of water in every month.

FYI...My ARP head stud kit is torqued to 85ft/lbs, but obviously made of harder material.

I guess I can try 55 ft/lbs and see what happens

Don't go past 70.
I torqued mine fine to 67 and most of them went a bit past 70 but the top right one..well it didn't break, but it just stripped a big piece of the thread in the block...so i have to retap the block, but I left it and it was running fine NA..ain't going to boost it anymore, but now I got the fixed the stripped thread for the tensioner bolt...going to put a self tapping insert with sum JBweld
BY the way the new car's engine runs so good...too bad the body is kinda beat up with sum nasty little rust spots..just sucks and a paint job...that even my 7 year old neigbhour can do with a spray can

OH MAN... Hey... you wouldn't happen to be REUSING STOCK NON-REUSABLE Head Bolts would you??? Overtightning head bolts = very bad idea. Take it from my man Semnos, you wouldn't want to shred a bolt off in ur block would u? how about stripping a few threads??? How about spending a few $$$ and going and getting some nice ARP Head Studs or at least some new oem head bolts. You'll be happy you did ;)

I measured the bolts. They are all within tolerences, and the motor isn't run down. Besides the cheapest price I could get is 325 plus tax for ARP ones. Thats, Canadian by the way.

Well, I made a mistake, the torque seqeunce is, 22 to 47 to 61 ft/lbs for a b16 or 63 ft/lbs for a B18c5 (Type-R)

I just successfully torqued mine to 65 ft/lbs which is 6.5% over. I think that should be ok for now.

And the arp headbolts are 225 plus tax, not 325. thats a typo.
