hard cold start
So when I leave my car overnight it takes quite a few cranks to start but when warm it's fine. It's not the battery, alternator or starter. I just replaced the fuel filter, plugs, rotor and it still does it. Any suggestions as this is annoying me that i can't figure it out. I'm thinking it could be coil or fuel pressure regulater but i don't want to waste anymore money.

Re: hard cold start
when it first starts up after the few cranks.. does it run? or do you need to feather the gas.. id check things like cap and rotar, coil, igniter, fuel pump maybe? if you have a leak in your fuel system that might do that.. fuel injector seals? i doubt its the seals but hey, doesnt hurt to check anyways right? then again, if it sits for a few days.. the fuel could drain back into the tank possibly.. sounds interesting, hope ya figure it out tho

Re: hard cold start
once it starts it runs fine and will start fine for the rest of the day unless it sits for more than 8 hrs or so

Re: hard cold start
what size injectors?

Re: hard cold start
I have the same problem man, ill be throwing my other distributor on soon, ill let u know if that changes anything, im also having the worst sputtering in gear problem and i cant figure it out, motor is fine, everything is from a jdm low mileage swap, new fuel filter, no leaks... not sure about pump situation but the car idles fine.

Re: hard cold start
why can't it be the battery? cuz it shows 12v+ ?
I used to have a hard time cold starting. went away after the battery died and got a new one ;D |
Re: hard cold start
It's not really cold since I park it in the garage...........I meant cold start as in leaving it overnight. 88turbocrx let me know how it goes, I'm thinking it might be the dizzy too, that or the coolant temp sensor is out of whack.

Re: hard cold start
the battery point was saying that even if your battery is pushing 12+ volts, it may drop a lot in starting, old batteries can do that. Hondas don't take a lot of power to start, so a bad battery could start it, and the system may have a slight drain on the battery, so after sitting for long, it gives less than if it's been driven and charged recently. Let the car sit overnight and jump it, see if it starts right up, if so, you're battery is fuxored.
If not, I'm not sure what it would be, you mentioned the rest of my ideas, but I'm doubting the dizzy, a bad dizzy or bad cap/rotor does not usually work well sometimes, and not at others.. if it is bad, it is bad. |
Re: hard cold start
i`ve had the same symptom in the civic, it crank exactly 5 times to start when it`s dead cold, but take just one singal crank to starts during the day.
it`s been doing it even since i hack with the head/cam when it was NA, changed/tuned everything possible (back to stock cam/head, fuel pump/FPR/timing belt/tensioner/rotor/dizzy/cap/wire/plug/ground wire/thottle body/ IACV/HG/injector/stock intake/O2 sensor/battery) And it`s still there. BUT it disappered after i switched to Uberdata 8) so IMO just live with it and save some $ LOL |
Re: hard cold start
Yeah I'm getting sick or replacing ---- that doesn't even do anything................it's seems that the fuel line is losing pressure overnight. I'm going to prime the line 8 times tomorrow to see if it helps. Lately it's been takking at least 10 cranks then kinda starts. :P
|
Re: hard cold start
i tried the prime before start thing and let me tell you it does NOT work :-*
mine would lose fuel pressure in about 15 to 20 min if weather is cold. but i doubt it has anything to do with starting, coz if u think about it, if it Is the fuel pressure, it should be hard to start even during the day after u`ve driven it. oh forgot to mention, mine still does it even after i had the whole motor rebbuilt LOL quit thinking and keep driving 8) |

Re: hard cold start
i always do. let the pump prime then turn off (your CEL will go on, then off too), then start it.

but not anymore until i have a setups thats really worth doing it :-X |
Re: hard cold start
I primed the line 5 times this morning and it only took 4 cranks to start :P...........I replaced the FPR and see how that goes. It seems like it's not even holding enough pressure to start the car.
