good compression, uses oil ??

my friend has a stock 99 GS with 108,xxx miles on it. the problem is when he downshifts for example to second and starts to accelerate, black smoke comes out of his exhaust. it only smokes when the engine is as high rpm. we did a compression test yesterday and he had 155,160,150,165. it also uses oil he goes thru a quart once a week. any help would be appreciated.

compression seems a bit low to me. Did you let the car warm up first, open the throttle all the way? What's his setup? Black smoke means he's running rich. Are you sure your not leaking oil?

car was warm when we did it yesterday. we did it closed throttle. car is stock only has a air filter and cat back exhaust. there is no sign of any oil leaking.

try it again w/ the throttle all the way open. compression test only takes 4-5 min. literally.
whats your setup?

Compression seems a tad low, its possible rings may be showing signs of wear. Its also a possibility that the valves may be leaking due to worn guides, or seals. A leak down test will help to narrow down your possible leak.

You could havegood compression and have bad oil rings, also worn stem sealswont effect compression eather, but they o nly leak under deceleration...
