getting my timing right...

alright well 1 problem ive been worried about with my vitara setup before i put my turbo on is my ignition and cam timming...

I used a y8 block and head with a z6 crank with y8 cam and crank gears with a z6 belt and i cant get my cam timming perfect.. car runs great but its like a half a tooth off.. Is there something in this list of parts that isnt compatiable with another that is throwing it off??

Its also affecting my ignition timing badly.. I cant get the timming within stock spec at all.. Im probbaly around 18 btdc with my dizzy all the way retarted...

May sound stupid... But when im tunning in crome does it really matter what my dizzy is at (timing wise) as long as my map says im ok??

For example... if i have my map in crome set at about 18 degrees at 7000 rpms and 10 psi will dizzy postion change that at all?? Or is it only going to rely on what the computer wants it to be??

Those fuckers at autozone don't know ----. When you go into a place like that you need to be prepared to educate them, not the other way. They want to sell whatever they can, even if it means returns and possible trips back to the store.

the computer would have to be wrong then because i watched them as they checked between the 2 years and it kept comming up with the same part number..

So does anyone know if they are the same belt or what?

honda shows different part numbers for each.

Don't ever, ever go into any auto parts store and ask them for a part without you knowing the exact part number you need.

Don't answer their stupid questions pertaining to your car, just tell them the part number and that's all you want.

im alo kinda wondering the same thing, i run a y7 block with a z6 head and a z6 crank a timing belt. my timing always seems fucked up too. its parked for winter now and its all getting redone in the spring so it doesnt really matter now i guess

Using a Z block/Y head here, Z belt works fine.

just make sure you know how many degree's its off and remember to keep then in mind with tuning.. 18 degrees on 10lbs .. so its at 20 then if its 2 degrees off

well im going to tear the timming belt and gears off and check to see how far off it really is.. Because i remember now that when i put the crank shaft pully on the tdc mark was off of compared to the tdc mark on the oil pump... Its been awhile since i did it so im gonna just take another look at it i guess.

Which timing gear are you using? That makes a difference if the y8/z6 gears are different. (i know close to nothing about d series :1 )

I never line it up with the marks, i always pull #1 plug and fire a long shaft in there(3/8 extension works great if you have a long enuf one), rotate the crank manually until you are TDC, this way you are always 100% sure where you are at no matter what the marks say.

...there is a little bit of room for error doing it that way isnt there? since you can turn the crank a little each way without the extension moving up/down cant you

Re: getting my timing right...

sorry to thread jack but, i also was wanting to make sure what timing marks to set at idle? i have three marks plus tdc mark. my question is on the center mark on the three = 16* btdc.

is this the one needs to be set at for base timing at idle?
