gap of oil ring.....

so i was fitting my rings....finished the compression ones and started to gap the oil rings and one of the oil rings i ground the ---- out of and now the gap is at .050 :X limit is .030

so will i be ok? there are two oil rings on each piston and the rings only really hold the middle part on...opinions?
first engine build and was using an air grinder because the compression rings were really hard and it worked well for them, just not for the softer oil rings (wont do that again)

oh boy...an air grinder? If its a motor you care about i would just run to the parts store and buy some more. Maybe you can buy just one cylinder's worth? I think i run a pretty big oil ring gap since i didnt gind any off them and they were already bigger than spec lol (i didnt bother to check what the actual gap was)...so you never know

Re: gap of oil ring.....

yea I was using an air grinder because i had to file/grind about .01 off each compression ring-the hell with using a file to remove most of the material but it lead to removing way too much off the first oil ring i had to gap- this is a complete low budget build but mainly because i did most of the work and cheap vitaras and b18 rods

... yah i would get mor rings if you got the money...but i think if you put the gap of one of the oil rings on one side of the piston and the gap of the other ring on the other side of the piston you might be ok.

its not the money i got my vitaras for 100 w/ rings- i just have put an assload of time into the build/ others time too and the fact that i dont think a stock oversized d16 piston ring is the right size for the vitaras and people online only want to sell me the whole ring kit but it looks like that is my only option

well i think you might be able to get away with what i said with the puting the gaps on the opposite side of eachother..but i would get a few more opinions on that idea before you go through with it

You ALWAYS stager the gaps in piston rings, not just in this situation.

As for the OP, get some new rings, rings are cheaper than an engine shitting the bed due to oiling problems. And as for using an air grinder to cut the rings down....use a file and have some patience.
