First engine rebuild-- few questions
I'm putting in a set of used 10:1 srp pistons next weekend, with the engine in the car. First question is: Do I need to take the stock piston/rod assemblies to a machine shop to have it taken apart and have the stock rods put on the srp's? The manual says I need to, but sometimes they feed you bs, so i dunno. I have a torque wrench, 3 stone hone, ring tool, ring compressor, and am borrowing a timing light-- is there any other specialized tools I will need? Care to give me any advice to a first timer? I just want my car to run good again. I just deturbo'd it until I build a new kit, and there was probably a half quart of oil in my charge pipes from the fucked rings in cylinder 2.

Re: First engine rebuild-- few questions
If you are reusing the OEM rods, then yes you will need to swing by a machine shop to have them pressed.
If you ask, alot of places will just press them while you wait, it only takes them a few minutes. |
Re: First engine rebuild-- few questions
---- you, you get no responses because you ask worthless questions.

Clearances are for ricers.

Re: First engine rebuild-- few questions
Rod bearings are for ricers. Just use two pieces of bologna, works every time.

Should I replace the rod bearings while they're out? and how much do I need to worry about clearances-- can I just reasonably assume they will be ok? (I have no tools to check this stuff, but I could prolly borrow them if needed)

If you are rebuilding an engine get someone to help you the first time. If you are asking questions online, then you are not ready to do it. |
Re: First engine rebuild-- few questions
Once again everyone thinks there an engine builder
Go to the machine shop. Ask the 60 year old man questions. Doubt him because you read something on the net. Watch old man kick you out for being a dip ----. |

Sadly, cold hard physical realities are much more difficult to manipulate. It takes skill, observation, and experience... none of which you can get from the interwebs. |

Re: First engine rebuild-- few questions
simple enough, rebuild it per the manual. Its why its there and you can almost never go wrong using it. I would replace the bearings for the simple fact of the peice of mind. How much are they? -very cheap in relation to having a super fresh bottom end when you are all said and done.
So yeah, my advice, rebuild it per the book. |
