Fireballing?

I know that some turbo imports (and alot of turbo domestics) end up running so rich that they will actually dump fire balls or sparks out of the exhaust.

Is this a result of a failed cat, or a gutted cat, or even a missing cat? Or is it because of their fuel mixtures?

Only logical reason I think a Honda might do it is because the MAP sensor expects so much more air once you shift (and the BOV vents it out) and in turn you have more unburned gas hitting the exhaust.

I'm gonna kinda admit, it would be cool to ---- a few sparks out my exhaust but right now all I do is make raspy noise :)

Re:Fireballing?

iwas told that this was a big fine because a
fireball =no cat

yeah its a federal law to have catalytic converters I know that. I am just curious :)

Re:Fireballing?

if you just have sparks coming out it could be that the cat is breaking apart and the pieces are glowing because they're so damn hot. my ---- runs rich and back fires sometimes (NA), but I don't have a fireball.

Not where I live sucka. :P I can be shooting 6 foot flames and clouds of black ass smoke out of my exhaust and it's all legal. 8)

Re:Fireballing?

I think the fireballs are a result of a too high f and f ratio.

hotrex 03-19-2004 02:23 PM

Re:Fireballing?

agreed, you need nos to shoot flames.

Chacko 03-19-2004 03:00 PM

Re:Fireballing?

you don't need nitrous to shoot flames...
Just need to run to much fuel and have it not burning right in the exhaust :)

Re:Fireballing?

the owner of the local graphics shop was planning on putting propane spray with a spark plug into his camero exhaust, I'll go get some v-tech stickers and see how he's doing with the project.

Re:Fireballing?

it was a j\joke. obviously you need nos for everything

Usually cars with MAF (Mass air flow sensors) do this because of the exact reason u stated above, however, you can't fool a map sensor because it runs off of absolute pressure, not mass, and it is located on the throttle body, after the bov, not before the bov like a MAF's...

Re:Fireballing?

one of the chicks that has a turbo del sol and using the Rebic 5 system will dump sparks out her exhaust and she's only running 9-11 psi. I think its just because she has no cat honestly.

used2baracer 03-20-2004 01:14 AM

Re:Fireballing?

sparks... I've never seen that... I think you are referring to a backfire... my sohc vtec crx shoots fire out when it backfires and i have a hi-flo cat...

Chacko 03-20-2004 01:27 PM

Re:Fireballing?

back fire is completely different, thats the result of your engine firing ... well backwards.

crx2fast 03-20-2004 03:56 PM

Re:Fireballing?

yea my buddies gsx shoots out a little flame. i think its because of having no cat though. see hes got that apex down pipe and yada yada. it never did it befor when he had his stock exhaust. id have to say its kinda sick seeing it ;)

ha... not quite... it's usually a result of running too rich (i.e. taking ur foot of the gas really quick when shifting) or timing being off/too retarded...

Semnos 03-20-2004 05:37 PM

Re:Fireballing?

yup used2baracer is right.
I shoot flames everyday ... ;D
I have no muffler my exhaust ends under the car before the bends and 2 to 3 times a day I hear and feel a blaaaammmmm and....people in other car tell me at the stop light that my car was on fire ;D

Chacko 03-20-2004 09:14 PM

Re:Fireballing?

back firing is like a mis fire, except that the explosion occurs somewhere in the headers. I'm talking about generating fireballs in the exhaust, and its only plausible without a catalytic (or a gutted) catalytic converter. Because the device itself demeans the entire ability to do this.

Doofnoil 03-21-2004 11:30 PM

Re:Fireballing?

there's really only two possible reasons to fart fire...
#1 is a rich condition
#2 Hydrogen...

#1 there might be fuel making it's way past the glowing turbo into the exhaust and upon closing the throttle the flow of exhaust decreases so rapidly that the pressure decreases so quickly the gasoline reaches some sort of flashpoint or whatnot?

another thing ight be that the h2o that is formed actually decomposes inside the hot turbocharger and after closing the throttle...refer to above.

I think #2 is kind of out there, but ifthe flame was a bright white then it might be plausible?

Re:Fireballing?

So, umm...why hasn't anyone mentioned ALS (Anti-Lag System) aka bang bang? You retard the hell out of your timing, let some fuel into the turbine and boom...keeps your turbo spooled between shifts.

Gotta do that when goin downtown...watch everyone hit the ground...

Re:Fireballing?

both mine and a friends sohc vtec civics with no cats would shoot fireballs when shifting, but now that im boosted, it hasnt done it..
