F series expense
Trying to avoid the higher costs of a B series build and stick to a D, but I want a little more displacement. Wondering what kind of prices F series builds run in comparison to the other more common D and B.
Hrm, It'll takes some doing to reach my goal for a D. Need to get the wife's Mustang cleaned up and sold, so I can find a straight EF chassis. Tried cleaning up the interior yesterday but its tool cold without a garage, hands keep going numb.
I don't get a ***** about having VTEC to me it seems that it would make it harder to tune having the two lobes to account for, but I'm wanting 275-350 if I can squeeze it out of an a6. Otherwise I'll need to go with the LS or B20, just trying to keep my costs as low as possible. I'm going back to Hondas as my toy because I have a baby due next month, I want to have my fun but I don't want to be put in a bad financial position because of it. So I'm thinking an EF hatch (wish I could get another CRX) and a nice built D.
I've messed with D's, I've messed with B's and I was getting ready to mess with F's but I found a H23 at the yard so I jumped on it...atleast around here is you go to the junkyard you have your pick of D and F motors, no one touches them so for a budget build they are the way to go...for your power goals it can be done but might be a little easier to squeeze out of an F...but then again its gonna be more work/money to get the F into an EF...I'm looking into and H2B since I already and B swapped but they aren't cheap and finding a kit used for cheap isn't easy...
I think the tq and power levels you can get out of a F or H motor make it well worth the investment and its something different to see under the hood of a civic/CRX since it seems everyone has a boosted B series anymore...

How do the H and the F handle boost pressures?I don't know much about their design, are the open deck like the others? If so, can you do the ghetto block fill on them? I plan to do a bunch of fancy race modification but HMT/redneck style on the cheep.
I'm still reading up...I believe the H23 is closed deck and some of the JDM H22's are...H series has the FRM sleezes which hate forged internals so you'd have to resleeve or get the proper internals to deal with the FRM...I'm just boosting the hell out of the stock H23...I was told it should be able to handle 350-400 Im gonna see how true that is
the F series have iron sleeves so internals are ok, plus alot of stuff is interchangeable the H's have a bigger bore but I believe you can use the crank out of the H23 to make a stroker motor in an F or H22, plus the heads are interchangeable so you have a nice choice of SOHC, SOHC Vtec, DOHC, and DOHC Vtec...I think the DOHC H23 head will be great for boost but also heard one of the SOHC F series heads can be worked to out flow and H heads...but on a budget build the H23 should work fine, I believe the H and F have some oiling problems so I'd suggest throwing a new oil pump in just for security...
I know HT sucks but I found some good info on there motors in the Prelude forum FAQ section...
