Engine work question....
 

Hey Guys,

So we are replacing valve stem seals on a D16A6 motor this weekend, and have decided to try it without pulling the head, using one of the air hold tools and an overhead spring compressor.

The factory manual calls for a special tool for installing the seals, which I assume is used so you do not deform the gasket, which has a metal component to it.

Has anybody replaced these seals, either using or not using a special tool? If you have not used the special tool, what did you use, and did you have good results?

isnt buying a head and a new HG cheaper then all those tools and labour involved..

but im thinking u dont wanna pull the head. :-\ any reason why not? it would be faster..

Hey Shortyz,

We spent $12 on the tools, and $16 on seals. We are using the hose from a compression tester to charge the cylionders. I figure I can replace the seals without pulling the head. This means all we have to pull are the plugs, valve cover, cam and rockers, and we are ready to go. No dealing with the exhaust manifold, intake manifold, fuel system, or cooling system. Compression is good on the engine, so I would rather not disturb the head/block seal if I can avoid it.

I figure that not removing the head will save at least an hour or so, but am open to arguments against my analysis!

ya, the timing belt is a bitch, I hate that bitch. it sounds to me like you can do it.
