did you upgrade your cams?

am i wrong in thinking that port/polishing a stock motor doesn't do crap or makes it slower? either all motor that or turbo it right away

the port and polish wont really change much on an N/A car with stock cams. sounds like possibly the timing belt is off a tooth

did you set you're valve lash? wouldnt really make a huge difference if ur using the same cam, but if you had ur valves ground i'd do it especially. if you hadnt, do it.

very untrue. For most people with a dremel tool that is true. I have been able to get 20+whp out of stock cams stock motor with a ported head for years

well i have always had a check engine light on so im not sure about if its on for any other reason but i thought i had the timing on right maybe not ... i have two choices for my timing on the cams i could either line up the two holes inside the valve cover on the cams and the first cam hold down deal...or my other way was to just put my crank on number one cylinder and put both arrows up on the gears but ...either way one is off either the cam hole inside are off or if i line up the holes the arrows will be off..so im not sure wich way would work better to get the timing on

this is how you gears should be aligned
http://www.thezcr.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3346

you have timing issues... line the crank up on the white mark on the pulley indicating TDC on the compression stroke and look at you cam gears if they dont look like this then you know you need to fix it.. it should look like this if it doesnt then its wrong and you need to do it until it looks like the pic

im sure a lot of power can be made with a good port and polish, but im sure the average person isnt going to make their car slower.
