Engine Building Tips Thread: Add here

I'm hoping to start a resource thread with various engine building tips, links, pics and write ups would be great.

first startup, wait 10secs as you back out onto the road with no throttle input, and proceed to do dirty thirds straight to redline

Most motors I care about I warm up for 10 to 20min, shut it down and change the oil. Then run the motor hard for about 20miles or so, come back and change the oil again. Then rip here hard for the next 200miles and rechange the oil. Mind you to use the cheapest oil you can ;)

Pay attention to your ring end gaps and your piston to wall clearance.

Make sure you spin the motor over once or twice before you take it off the stand.

Those are the biggest two I can think of, if it spins over, makes compression, you'll probably be good to go.

but NOT oil filters. $2 you spend now is better than the head you trash later :S

After you start it up and get it half way warmed up, take it out and slowly take it up to 4k(assuming everything is ok and not leaking), and let it engine brake itself all the way down to about 2k. Do that a few times and start working your way up the rpm range. Rember hi vac & rpms will help seat your rings.
