ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

this is a long post, but please read and help me if you can. any suggestions would be welcome right now - im completely ------- lost, and need help.

ok, i dont even know where to start. today has been wierd, really wierd. when driving my car this morning, my vafc stopped working. i had it on rpm monitoring, and all of a sudden rpms became 0. i thought...ok, maybe a loose rpm wire connection. then, about 30 sec later... the whole thing turned off, and my car was basically dead after that. i tried turning the car off then on to see if the afc would work...nope. i checked the afc connections to the ecu and made sure that they were secure. after that, i tried to see if the afc would turn on... it did. ok, so i started my car like normal. everything is all good on the way back home, until i get a check engine light. ok, i check the code and its code 9 - cyl 1 pos. i cleared the code each time, but it kept coming back as soon as i started the car. i decided it was time for a lunch break. after coming back outside to work on my car, just for grins i tried starting it. no code...? ok, it fixed itself? well, i drove to school no problem. but on the way back when i was almost home, all kinds of ---- happened. first, my radio started to cut out. i thought it was just the station, so i changed it. same thing on every station. then, my headlights got dim, my blinkers started blinking FAST(strobe light fast), my oil pressure light turned on then off immediately once, and my alternator light did the same thing. my afc was doing the same ---- as this morning too. my car started acting like it wanted to die right as i was parking it, but i put it out of its misery and turned it off myself. ----!!!!!!! i don't know what to do anymore. please post any ideas you may have.

when's the last time you worked on the car and what type of work? check for crushed/pinched wires maybe.

dead alternators make cars go nuts... check alternator.

Check your ground wires. A loose ground can cause all of that and more. There are several grounds on your car, from the battery to the block, from the block to the frame, from the block to the ECU. They all have to be TIGHT and CLEAN.

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

first of all, i love hmt, you guys are the ----. sorry onyx bout the sorta double post, but the other one was before everything went psycho-er. last time i worked on the car was when i changed out the starter like two days ago. i think the alternator is still good(brand new from autozone), ill pull it and have it tested. i pulled out the starter just for the hell of it, and took it to autozone for a cash refund(long story but they didn't wanna give me another one). so im gonna get another starter from pep boys or checkers.

i am going to completely re-ground my car. im going to change the one from the battery to tranny, head to body, but am kind of confused about the thermostat grounds. i checked the thermostat ground and saw that there are four wires wrapped in a loom going to it. i dunno about the other three, but i know the brown one w/ black stripe is ground to the ecu. im not sure if it is cut anywhere in between the ecu and the thermostat ground point. would it be possible to just cut the brown/black ground (pin a16 on pm6 ecu)wire near the ecu, and then just extend the wire from there through the firewall and ground that to the body? i was thinking of stripping a small amount of paint on the body of the engine bay, and then drilling a screw into that area to make a solid ground connection. afterwords, i was gonna crimp the ecu ground wire onto one of those connectors that look like --0 and screw it into the area i prepped. is this a good idea? any other ideas for making sure my grounds are PERFECT? lemme know guys. once again, thank you to everybody for your help... you don't know how much help you guys have been.

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

Here's an easier way to check the ecu ground...

move carpet back so u have access to the ecu.]

turn key to ON, did it blink once? if yes then u have ground.

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

oh, that's what that blink is, I thought my car was going balls.

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

ya that single first blink is the ecu's auto check.

FUUUUCCCCKKKKKK!!!!

ok, i completely re-grounded my car with 4 gauge wire and also put in a BRAND NEW starter. i was really hoping for the best, but.... >:(...i got donkey ----. after i regrounded my car and installed the new starter, it wouldn't start. it wouldn't even try. when i went to start the car, it acted like when you try to start it without pressing in the clutch (my foot was all the way down on the clutch). i made sure my grounds were clean as ---- and took extra time to make sure that they were good. i tried a bunch of times to start it. ONCE, and only ONCE, i heard a low whirring noise, and then a click. also, i made sure the ecu was grounded. i saw the light come on then off REALLY quickly when i tried what crx88si said. i don't know what the hell to do anymore, anybody got any other ideas as to WTF is going on with my rex? once again all help is GREATLY appreciated...and im still ------- lost... :-\ .

I had a problem something like this with a Ford Escort once(not mine)turns out it had a bad ignition switch. I don't know if you have checked that but it may be worth looking at. How old is your battery? You could have a internal short in the battery. Did you check you battery terminals, could be a bad conection.

I bet you're right. Sounds like the battery is dead because of a bad alternator.

its a brand new battery with brand new + and - cables. the terminals still look new, i even have those felt looking anti corrosion things. i double checked my battery cable connections, and they are clean. damn, im starting to hate my car...

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

Even brand new ---- goes bad. You didn't mention anything about the alternator. If I were you I would take it to Checkers or somewhere that checks charging systems for free and see if everything is ok.

"Check your ground wires. A loose ground can cause all of that and more." Yes... my car was going nut for a week now!! doing similar stuff, not reving, stalling, and running like ----. i had gotten all kinds of cel's and i couldn't find out what was going wrong. I bought all kinds of new ----, but it didnt' help!!! to make a long story short, i was playing around with some wires and relized that my ground wire on the thermostat housing was loose, not off, but loose... i suggest that you just check that one, it is not very noticable, kinda hidden, but it can be the problem.

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

well... customcoach, i think you are right about the ignition switch thing. i talked to my buddy today, and he gave me a suggestion. he told me to hook up a momentary switch to my starter(also known as pushbutton start), and see if that helped. he said to test it, put your key into the ignition in the on position. then, take a piece of wire with both ends stripped and short out two parts of the starter(one where the + connects, and the other where that little wire connects). anyways, when i did that, it started right up like a champ. i couldn't believe it. i did it like five more times just to make sure. the bad thing is... after i hooked up the momentary switch, it stopped working. i think somehow i might have burned out the starter, or the battery might be low. i pulled both of them, and will have them tested tomorrow. ill let you guys know how it turns out... thanks for all the help everyone. :D

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

ya, high mile hondas have a prob where the contacts wear out in the ignition switch. now to replace it it takes about 15 minutes, and a phillips screwdriver. it just plugs into the fuse panel, and screws into the back of the ignition key switch. also check output votage at the battery with a volt ohm meter. you could be getting high voltage, from a bad alt regulator. that will make a honda electrical system freak out. you should see about 13.2 to 13.8 volts maybe higher with the lights on and the idle about 1200.

Re:ELECTRICAL BULLSHIT!!!!!

ok. my battery was DEAD. i took it and the starter to checkers with my moms truck, and the starter tested good, and the battery tested dead. i had them charge it up for me. afterwards, i put the battery back in my car. i took the car to get the alternator tested at autozone. they hooked up their machine to my car, and it tested good. alright, everythings all good right? wrong. last night my car started acting all donkey ---- again like i described in the first post of this thread. i was like ---- that, it HAS to be my alternator. so this morning i went to take out my alternator. i was gonna return it whether it tested good or not, i don't give a ---- about their stupid machine anymore - its not very accurate. i had suspicions that it was bad, and had them test it a few times - but it always tested good. luckily, when i took the alternator there, it ------- FINALLY tested bad. good thing, cuz i was about to go ------ crazy if they tried to gimme any ---- about it like "no its a brand new alternator, must be your car so go ---- yourself, until it tests bad i cant do anything about it". the people at autozone don't really say it exactly like that, but they might as well the way they just always send me away like im some dumb ---- who doesn't know ----. i swear, these guys never believe me until my shits totally fucked. my guess is that the voltage regulator in the alternator was going out, so sometimes it would work, and sometimes not. whenever i took it to autozone it would decide to work, but in regular driving it started ------ up. i guess im just REALLY not lucky with autozone parts. im never buying ---- from autozone EVER unless its simple ---- like oil that cant be bad, or unless i have to make good on my lifetime warranties again.

once again, thanks everybody for your help.

james
