easy way to replace crank seal
so i got my motor running finally and i look under to see if there are any leaks and for sure my luck theres a couple drips coming from the fly wheel area so i take off the flywheel cover guard and for sure theres a steady drip im thinking its the crank seal is there any easier way instead of taking the whole motor out again to put a new one in or should i just take the tranny, flywheel, and clutch out? i have thee worst luck
its easy to replace get the tranny out and clutch and flywheel assmebly and take a screwdriver and pry on the seal on the inside lip. then take the new seal and put some grease on it. to install the new one, turn the old one over and use that to hit the new one in...it bottoms out so dont worry about putting it in to far...hope this helps you...lata
also, when you get it appart, check the crank for a groove where the seal sits. if there is a groove either set the seal in a different place on the crank or get a "speedi-sleeve". they are a little tough to find, but they are good
I heard mentioned that you can screw some wood/drywall screws into the seal, yank on them with pliers, and it'll pop free easily. That is, of course, if you've got another to replace it.
Definately take notice of how "deep" the seal is in the housing, and alter that by either: Push it in further, if you can. If you can't, leave about 1mm before bottoming out. This will do what "PhilStubbs" said by making sure the seal has a "new" surface in which to seal.

If you're going to go that far, why not just take the rear crankseal cover off and replace it on a bench? It's only a few extra bolts, and makes life a little easier :P Just make sure to get some honda-bond when you put the cover back on...works much better than normal rtv crap
