DX gears into an EX case (d series tranny guys, help)

I've got an EX tranny that pops out of second, would putting the gears from a DX tranny work? Any upsides or downsides to this? Any help appreciated.

it won't fix the problem..........

The countershaft clutch side bearing works its way out of the case, causing the tranny to pop out of second. If you've been holding it or forcing it into second, you WILL have damaged the 1-2 shifter fork.

bearing walked out.........

bearing tapped back in.........

staked with a punch to prevent it from happening again......

Changing the gears is not as easy as it sounds. The countershaft outer bearings have to be changed along with the mainshaft outer bearing. Then you have to shim the mainshaft which involves STRIPPING all the gears off the mainshaft, reassembling per Helms, measuring, adjust shims, likely have to order (7-10 day wait) and repeat when new shim arrive.

Get it wrong and you'll either lock the tranny, crack the case, or the mainshaft bearing will wear out in 1000 miles or less due to improper preload.

I don't know the history of this tranny, do you think I should try tapping the bearing back in and give it a shot or should I rip the whole thing apart and re-build?

tap and stake the bearing in, look at the 1-2 shifter fork, replace input shaft bearing and seal while it is apart.

ISB, seal, both washers = $40
1-2 shifter fork = $60

I'm assuming those prices are from majestic honda?

I won't deal with MAjestic every again.

West coast = www.slhonda.com
East coast = www.hondacheapparts.com (SUnnyside Honda)
Acura = www.acuraparts247.com

Sunnyside is usually the fastest shipper, but anyone can get the exact same prices from your local stealership.

What was your experience with Majestic? I've bought a few things from them so far with no problems.

I ripped it apart, the bearing had walked out (oh what a surprise, you were right). I tapped it back in and staked it down with a punch. I'm ordering my 1-2 fork, ISB, seal, and washers early next week. Now up next: OBX lsd. Any advice?

Earl on HT has a nice writeup on going through and retorquing the OBX units, and dressing the early units with a Dremel so they will release your driver's side axle.

Mista Bone also had a nice writeup squirrelled somewhere about diff installs. Somethingwhatsis about measuring the overal length of the stock diff from outsides of the diff bearings so you can figure the correct shimmage needed for replacement diff/LSD.

yea I've been looking for d series diff installs (specifically obx) on here and handy-tach but I haven't been able to find anything. I think I suck at searching.
