Default DOHC ZC oil pump failure

A month back i did a 130mph run on the motorway following an ITR. Was keeping the revs at 7000rpm for awhile. RIght after that my oil pressure light came up when i started from cold. I revved the engine alittle and it went away. This problem kept comming back for a few days and everytime i started from cold it shows the oil pressure light, but goes off once i revved it to 3000rpm.

after 4days it gave up and i had an oil pump failure. I bought a second hand zc and salvaged the oil pump and went about with the installation.

Yesterday, after a month of driving, the oil pressure light is showing again...., i hope it's not gonna die on me again!

What could be the cause of this? IS it the oil i use? i was using castrol RS oil. I must admit i am not using honda oil filter. but didnt have problems until i did the high speed run recently.

does the zc oil pump fail that easily?

any help from you guys will be greatly appreciated.

regards
keith

2nd gen ZC's have been known to have oil pump failures and that's what causes a rod through the block.

Are you sure your oil pressure sending unit is working properly?

i would get a new pump and put it on there, no sence in being cheap for the important crap.

yeah, my oil pressure sending unit should be working fine. I think i'm just unlucky with the oil pump. It's just a shitty job changing the oil pump, hate all the hassle...I will be changing my oil pump soon, but want to get to the root of the problem. Like, was it the oil i was using that caused it or the oil filter, which is not oem part or was it just because i drove it hard...

anyone knows if there's anyway to stregthen the oil pump? how can this engine sustain boost and high rpm operation if the stock oil pump's so inefficient?

I'm going turbo soon...so just want to get some advice on this..

thanks.

yeah,

as soon as i get back to singapore i'll order one brand new one. I'm in the UK you see...it costs 133pounds for a a new oil pump! crazy!!!

alternatively, i'll can change the rotors inside, which is preety cheap. I'll have to open up the pump first before i decide what to do.

just changed my oil and oil filter 2hrs ago. i'll keep my fingers crossed that when i start it from cold tomorrow the oil pressure light doesnt come on.

thanks guys!!!

btw, is there anyway i can get a stronger oil pump? i think the stock oil pump is not up to the task!!

This may help a little. It's about building a D-Series:

You don't need an OEM filter. Otherwise thousands of honda's would be having the same failure.

i've changed my oil yesterday to mobil 1. i did an engine flush before changing the oil. Car started with no problems this morning! so, it's down to the grade of oil used. I was too ambitious before, used the castrol RS oil, which is really thick!!! thats why probably choked my pump. lol...

thanks for the help guys! really appreciate it.
