DIY Nitrous kit guru's thread

So I'm thinking about how fun it would be to do a DIY nitrous kit and I'm wondering if any nitrous guru's see a problem with what I want to do.

Ideally I'd like to go with a zex type kit because it controls the hole ----, so my plan is to get a 10 lb fire extinguisher and start from there. For the control ---- I'll probably use an rpm window switch. The lines are a no brainer, and then all I'd really need is solenoids.

Any of you guys know of any problems with a setup like this? We haven't had a nitrous thread in a while, so lets get some info up. :D

I have seen that site. That guy is a nutbag, but it has alot of information. I'm trying to get some people who have done ---- like this to tell us what they've done before.

I don't have any suggestions or advice, but I might just want to do a DIY nitrous kit now too. looks like fun.

You could always do this. http://www.geocities.com/calgarycivics/NOS.html :P

No way! You didn't actually try that did you? I would be really pissed if I got whipped cream in my motor...

BTW, what about Cheese in a Can? Does anybody know if they have NO2 in it?

haha, in stock market news, Reddi Whip is up 5000 points.

I've got a revolutionary design I thought up, I really think its gonna work great.

you might run into problems getting that fire extinguisher filled. i've seen some hardcore redneck off road shops that do nitrous fills; that might be your ticket. what kind of pressure are those things rated for?

most bottle valves and solenoids take a -4 fitting

an rpm window switch in conjunction with a WOT/microswitch is the BEST to activate everything.

stay away from teflon tape, use teflon paste to seal everything up, should be good to go.

i'm kind of a nitrous nut, so post up any questions you might have, maybe i can send you in the right direction.

I don't have any direct questions. I was looking at nitrous kit options for my car (scheduled to be completed in 2009) and I thought we should have a good thread about different ways of setting up cheap nitrous kits. Maybe more for the archives than anything.

I'm pretty sure a fire extigusher bottle cannot hold the 900-1100 psi that will be in the bottle, you can find a used bottle for 50-75 dollars and then go with your kit from there.

nitrous isn't something to be done cheaply in my opinion. spend a couple hundred bucks and get a real kit. i've seen/heard of too many freak accident's and explosions related to nitrous to skimp out on it. is your car really not going to be done until 2k9 ??? if not, just save .50 cents a day and you'll have plent for a bangin n2o set up by the time your car is ready to move on it's own power :)

Re: DIY Nitrous kit guru's thread

Oh jesus. The first link listed (the DIY nitrous guy) says anything that carries co2 can be used for nitrous. We're talking welding tanks, fire extinguishers, soda carbonation bottles, ect.... Ghetto D has made his own kit before, and it wasn't the 75 dollar bottle.

We rarely have a nitrous thread, lets just fill one up with info instead of arguing about who's smarter.

Where's whitey? ::)

lol I just seen this thread. If your going to build your own kit don't model it out of the gay barney box zex kit. If your going to do a Nitrous kit than you need to get a wet kit, dry kits are gay. Also get a real bottle so you'll be able to pass tech.

Son, I don't know exactly what what I'm getting for sure. Give some tips on putting some ---- together so when someone asks how to do it we can tell them "search noob".

What's wrong with the zex kit? I like the fact that it's self controlling. I know there's ways to do this on your own, but I haven't figured it all out yet.

Since everyone loves pictures its my awesomeness of a nitrous kit:

Attachment 38439

Attachment 38440

-NX direct port kit 100 shot
-NOS purge valve
-Crane Cam ignition retard activated by nitrous solenoids
-2 10lb bottles

The "self controlling" is hype. To me its just a glorified dry nitrous kit that uses a fuel pressure saftey switch that NOS offered for years. You need a wet kit to be safe especially if your spraying on top of boost.

Re: DIY Nitrous kit guru's thread

The think I've never understood about the fuel solenoid is that for the given fuel jet, there is a fuel pressure that the kit should work at. So you put the solenoid in front of your stock fuel pressure regulator, but how do you regulate the fuel pressure to the solenoid, and how do you keep it constant through the rpm range. The consistancy of the fuel pressure to the fuel solenoid is one of the things I can't figure out.

Re: DIY Nitrous kit guru's thread

the stock fpr is a 1:1 so essentially all it does is put a bunch of pressure ontop of the fpr so it addes fuel.. I noticed when using the zex kit that my fp went up to about 75-80 psi (just free reving with n2o line out of the intake.)

Re: DIY Nitrous kit guru's thread

No, but what I'm saying is that you have a "pretty much" set psi of nitrous flow to a given jet size = same amount of nitrous through whole rpm range.

Now on the fuel solenoid you'll have a set jet size, but how do you control the fuel pressure going to that solenoid to match the "same amount of nitrous at all rpms" with fuel at the same flow at all rpms unless you can control exactly how much fuel pressure the fuel solenoid is seeing at all times?

The fuel jets are designed at 40psi of fuel pressure. Any more fuel pressure than you'll be running rich or lean out with not enough pressure.

Re: DIY Nitrous kit guru's thread

i had a wet setup -single fogger. no rpm window, just a micro switch on the tb and an arming switch. i'd launch and just not put my foot right to the floor, then once i hook up down it goes and back the head snaps. you will probably want a couple relays to run the solenoids off of. getting a fire extinguisher filled with n2o might not be so easy. the place i went to wouldn't fill my bottle without a pressure guage on it. also, is there a tube inside the fire ext. bottle? most n2o bottles have them i believe. i'd definitely recommend a wet setup. you do NOT want to run lean when the n2o comes on. and if you are using it from launch you definitely want to make sure you are in gear! i once saw a guy line up at the tree and put is foot down not in gear. his engine spat out his crank through the oil pan... messy :P
