i say the biggest would be the z6 is obd 1 and the y8 is obd 2.

so they're pretty much the same thing except for the obd1/2? What about the compression and hp? you guys would rather have a z6 than a y8?

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

yes i would rather have a z6.

y8's and all OBD2 oil pumps are crap, so if you do get one replace the pan and replace the pump with a obd1 or 0 one.

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

Its been attempted by a guy on SOHCHONDA.com

He had bad experiences with a few Y8 blocks and got tired of it.

Tried to find a solution in using a z6 pump and was unsuccessful.

His member name on the forum is Brooksto if anyone is interested.

If I have the time Ill speak to him and report back here.

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

Well remember, the D16z6/a6 pump will bolt on a Y7/y8 block you just cant run OBD2 with it anymore, thats probably what he ran into. The front crank sensor sits on the front of the oil pump rather than inside of the distributor like on obd0/1.

Correct me if I'm wrong chris... =)

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

The guy on Sohchonda says that the "z6" oil pump fits the block perfectly. All bolts holes etc.

But something about the oil pan interferes.

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

agreed, i know plenty of people that have replace the pans and pumps with obd1 parts and have had no problems with bearings, but just about every y8 that was using stock pump, had signs of wear (if not totally spun) on the bearing during tear downs, even one that was a fresh rebuild ::cough::hotrex::cough:: with 1k miles had ---- bearings with an obd2 pump. like jeff said though, you can't do it if you're putting it in an obd2 chassis b/c the ckp sensor is on the obd2 pump verses the dizzy for obd1. i believe the z6 head flows a little better than the y8 heads from what i hear, i don't have TOO much personal experience with d's to know for sure.

I was told y8 pans wouldnt fit on -95 D's and vice versa.

I will do a test fit tomorrow.

Do you understand that you have to change the pump in order to use the certain year pan? Thats what were talking about here.

If you use a D16y8 pump, you have to use a d16y8 pan. So if you swap a Y8 pan on Z6, its not going to fit! But if you swap a Z6 pump on a y8 block, with a z6 pan youll be fine. ::)

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

some guy has done it before, he used a z6 pump on a Y8 block, only one of the pan bolt does not line up.

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

ive just got the z6 block and y8 head, i figured it would be a better combo.....from many things ive read the z6 bottom end is stronger, better oil pump, etc. and the y8 head is better for my purpose (i dont need the 3hp of flow on the top end).....plus its better at resisting detonation.....i just need more info about the setup, ive been running mine for like 8 months, but i had to ghetto rig a a6 tensioner pully to make the z6 t-belt tight enough.....whatever though lol

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

I like the y8 heads for the fact that the stock cam is a hair larger, flow better, and have a nice quench area. If you were going with an N/A setup, i would more likely say the y8 is the way to go. It also jumps your C/R up because of the head design over a z6. My friend runs a d15 with a y8 head and pg7 pistons...somewhere around 13:1cr he claims, but man does that thing flow at 7800 rpm.
And from everything i've ever seen and read, supposedly the a6 block is the strongest, although the z6 and a6 block's are pretty much identicle. z6 oil pumps are better though ;D

Re:d16z6 vs d16y8

if i remember right it wasnt just the pans, but isnt the dipstick a issue???????

Johnyquest 09-17-2008 03:04 PM

Re: d16z6 vs d16y8

OLD ass thread but yes, it's the dipstick. The z6 stick is in the front and center, off the block, comes up in the middle of the header. The y8 one comes off the pan, therefore if you put z6 pan on y8 block, you have no dipstick. That's the problem I ran into when I blew my z6 and went to replace it with a y8 bottom end. That ------- motor still doesn't run right to that day. I lost the ------- z6 to a wrist pin C clip. I am still pissed, and it's been over two years.
