d16z6 to d16y8 - what changes are needed ?
 

i recently blew my d16z6 engine and there are no other d16z6 engines around to buy ( iam in london btw )
would i be able to fit d16y8 engine ?
what sort of changes should i be expecting ?

i know mines an obd1 and the y8 is a obd 2
so id need a obd2 ecu , right ?

just use the y8 shortblock.
everything else can be kept from the existing engine.
keep your z6 head, manifolds, engine harness, ecu, etc.

Thats the easiest way unless your head is messed up too. Also if you swap in the y8 the iacv sensor is different and dist. connectors are different too. Just open up both dist's and take your obd1 stuff and put it in the y8 dist. It'll just bolt right in. That goes along with all other dist's. if I remember correctly. Not quite sure about the obd0 stuff but I don't see why not. Then you don't have to chop up your mounts to fit it on. ;)

Dist. is easy. Get the male plug from the y8 and a female plug from the z6 and run the correct wires to the right terminal. Its all the same wires but on the 0bd2 plug...the plug is integrated into 1. If you look at both harnesses, you'll know what I'm talking about. You don't have to gut the internals. You're just making an adaptor from the 0bd1 plug to the 0bd2 plug. Why can't you just drop the full y8? Flow characteristics of the z6 are a bit better but the closed chamber of the y8 will yeild higher comp if properly done. Porting will cure the y8 head. Plus the mani on the y8 is a bit (i guess you can say better) better in flow with the nill larger and shorter plenum. You won't need the obd2 ecu because you are going to be running your obd1. You won't need the crank angle sensor from the y8 either. Use the z6 wiring harness to simpify. There were other small issues but its been so long that I've forgotten. GL!
