D16A9 engine noise

Hi guys,

Time for problems. This motor is a demon and i mean that it out pulls any other 16i-16 i come against over here.

BUT................

I have only started driving it again as i have been unable to insure it (hard over here) and i have noticed some noises in the engine that i do not like at all.

This motor gets dogged to 7800 at least once a day so i do give it a hard life.

I have noticed that at about 3500 to 4000 rpm, the engine gets a wee bit harsh and thrashy and if i listen carefully, i can hear knocking noises in line with the engine rpm.....not nice noises.

I know a good wee bit about cars but i am far from a "strip it down pro". I had thought that perhaps the bottom end bearings had gone. What do you guys think?

Someone else said piston slap to me but i thought that this would cause power loss and smoke, no?

Symptoms:

None really, there is no smoke, it idles fine, it isnt burning oil, it DEFINATELY isnt losing power. I can only hear the knocking while revving up not backing off. The harsh engine noise stays throughout. Its not the exhaust or the air filter as i replaced both with standard ones just to see, now i am back with the K&N and Remus :)

Another nuisance..........when taking up the drive and changing gear i can hear clunks............is this likely to be the driveshafts expiring as they take up any play.

All advice appreciated guys.

valves is a tikking noise..
knocking noise..Rod knock..
By by rod bearings....
Don't drive it anymore...You will probably need a new crank and one rod..new or used.
new rod bearings...and check the main bearings...there is a chance they are still ok.

the d16a9/a8 (ZC) are known to be "louder" mechanically than others.

adjust your valves, if that doesnt help then who cares! :P

Any way to check the rods/bearings without a full strip down (i.e. just take the sump off) ?

Valves are ok....................and there aint no way the valves would sound like this!

drop the pan and you'll see the rod / main caps.

update...............ok.............she is up on ramps in the garage now with the sump off her.

had a wee feel of the bottom of the rods last night but i couldnt feel any vertical play at all.

i did however find a couple of tiny shards of silver metal in the oil pump gauze.

rocker cover off getting shot blasted and powder coated.........tappets getting set again as they WERE out.............but they werent the noise.

i still really thing one of the big ends is gone but i will be taking a few caps off tonight and having a wee look.

incidentally, the clunking noise i was talking about.............the intermediate shaft bearing has gone............thats the one that joins the two shafts on the long side. Slight play in it.......enough to go "clunk".....

the journey continues into the bowels of the civic
