clutch cover torque specs

A LITTLE BACKGROUND:

alright. after new piston/ring installation i spun a rod bearing 15 mins after i started it up again. so i dropped the engine, took off the tranny, clutch, flyswheel, oil pump, pullies etc to get to the crankshaft. removed all the main journal caps and rod caps. removed the crank. took it to waterhouse motorsports in tacoma. they did an excellent job of regrinding it .010" over (.25mm). Next i bought .010" over ACL duraglide 780's to go with it. installed the crank and flywheel.

QUESTION:

Tonight, i just put in the stage 2 clutch. but have one question. On most honda's or toyotas. or whatever make . What is the ballpark of torque specs for the clutch cover? I did 20 ft lbs, but wanna know if u guys have even one or 2 number on your cars to throw at me to give me a good idea of about where i should tighten. I have a chiltons manual, but it doesnt go into detail about the clutch. Just the engine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: clutch cover torque specs

i just hand tighten it. afaik it only needs like 13 ft.lbs

Re: clutch cover torque specs

try searching for your actual specs, or get a chiltons manual. on hondas i think it is 19 lbs

edit--just noticed your manual didnt have it

are you kidding me? tighten it with a ratchet and call it good. not everything on a car has to be torqued to spec.

Re: clutch cover torque specs

I don't but the bolts back in the clutch cover, makes tranny swaps a little quicker :)

Damn straight, only tranny internals and engine internals need to be torqued to spec.

Re: clutch cover torque specs

he means the pressure plate not the flywheel cover...i think maybe you guys misunderstood him...or i did...or i misunderstood you guys. anyway, the pp bolts are something i like to torque to spec and loctite since i dont want those fuckers grenading my ----

Re: clutch cover torque specs

I don't even torque those........

Flywheel get hit with 1/2" impact on "2" at 120 psi (70 ft/lbs)
PP bolt get it from 3/8" air ratchet (25 ft/lbs)

Only bolts I torque are rod/main/head bolts.

those are pretty much the torque specs

like time i used an air rachet on the PP bolts that shti broke. lol. I've hand tightened plenty of PP and they have yet to fail. *crosses fingers* :P

Being the "tranny guru" that you are. Do you torque down the bolts in the tranny? I always do since they are small and mostly threaded into aluminum.

I had to bore out one of the 10mm bolts that hold down the shift mechanism in a friend's B tranny because the guys that supposedly "rebuilt" his tranny torqued it down too much and stripped the threads fromt he casing. They also cracked the casing were the 1/2' plug goes.

those bolts that hold the shift thingy can be hand tightened

When doing trannys, I torque NOTHING.

Case bolts get ran down with a weak 3/8" impact with 60 psi air supply, then I go around with ratchet and "spark plug tight" all the case bolts. Tighten one, skip two..13 bolts, go around the case 3 times.

lol i totally forgot i started this thread until like 2 seconds ago.. but yeah its the clutch cover (pressure plate cover). i just did 20ft/lbs and called it a day. i agree they're not as vital to have in spec as like your head bolts.. Anyways. thanks for the feedback.

DAN.

how did you spin a rod bearing?

what engine? cuz a model engine has its specific torque specs..

B16a plate pressure 25 N.M (19lb-ft)

B16a Flywheel 103 N.M. (76 lb-ft)

No, as I stated before. Proper torque of flywheel bolts when the impact gun stops turning, Proper torque for pressure plate bolts, is when the air ratchet stops turning. :y
